Betye Saar emerged as part of the Black Arts Movement in the 1970s and is best known for her collage and assemblage works. Raised in Los Angeles, she worked as an interior designer in the 1950s and shifted to printmaking a decade later. After the Watts Rebellion commonly known as the Watts Riots and the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., Saar began to create assemblage pieces that referenced politics, racism and racist symbols, technology, and memory. She uses her ...trove of collected/found objects to make works of art infused with stories that have personal meaning or that reimagine racist memorabilia into symbols of empowerment. In this print, Saar calls out racism and stereotypes through text and imagery. She depicts a Black domestic worker wearing a stereotypical household slave/servant uniform, complete with an apron. The serigraph, or silkscreen, is made to look like a wooden washboard, upon which clothes are scrubbed. This laborious method of washing is typically associated with the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Surrounding the image are three phrases: National racism at the top of the washboard, Liberate Aunt Jemima at the center, and We was mostly ‘bout survival'' at the bottom. Aunt Jemima is based on the stereotype of a mammy but is a figure used by Saar to represent empowerment. This print is a commentary on women’s roles, division of labor, and social class based on race. Betye Saar (American, born 1926), We Was Mostly ‘Bout Survival, 1998. Serigraph, 25 5/8 x 19 7/8 in. Crocker Art Museum, gift of Shirley and Guy Moore, 2018.74. Betye Saar / Roberts Projects, Los Angeles, California.

RePosted @nevadacitychamber Good morning from the #gvncculturaldistrict Yes, that’s right, Grass Valley and Nevada City are 1 of the 14 inaugural cultural districts in California. A cultural district is generally understood as a well-defined geographic area with a high concentration of cultural resources and activities.... Between Grass Valley and Nevada City we are home to the Nevada Theatre, the oldest theater in California, and over 100 arts-related organizations producing scores of annual festivals, street fairs, art walks and studio tours, and a generous base of artists and makers. As well as for its arts, the district is known for its expanding vineyards, wineries, and tasting rooms, and a trail network of outstanding natural beauty. The Nisenan lived in the region for thousands of years as part of a perfectly balanced ecosystem, thriving on the Yuba, Bear, and American river watersheds and, over time, their sacred places are being rediscovered and cherished. Nevada County Artist Relief Fund Arts events, concerts, and productions have been cancelled in venues across the county due to the effects of COVID-19 - and professional artists whose livelihoods are dependent on these events are facing insurmountable losses. In response, Nevada County Arts Council has formed a coalition of local arts organizations to create an emergency initiative to offer financial and informational resources to artists within Nevada County.... Now is the time to give back to our artists who contribute so much to the quality of our lives and the wellbeing of our community. Funds will be distributed as micro relief grants to eligible artists once our fund has reached a critical level. PLEASE GIVE GENEROUSLY! Your tax-deductible donation goes directly toward the support of professional artists in all disciplines whose livelihoods have been affected by the public health crisis. The fund has already received very generous $500 donations from both Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra (CATS) and Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, and hopes to raise $40,000 for our local artists. https://charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/artist-relief?

ARTIST IN STOREFRONTS 2020 THE ALPHA BUILDING 210 BROAD STREET, NEVADA CITY ... Remember the PastEmbrace the Future by Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra Design inspired by the Chinese author, Amy Tan and her book, The Joy Luck Club, a play CATS was due to perform in spring 2020, but which was postponed due to Covid. The Joy Luck Club is a story about healing and making peace between generations. On the opposite window, our installment is inspired by the Japanese Internment, or Japanese Incarceration, during WWII. The reality of incarceration of a people is very present today. There is nothing political about our designs. Rather, we hope they will stimulate thoughtful reflection. Our lead designer is Sovahn LeBlanc.
