This past Winter quarter, we had the privilege of working with two groups of students from the University of California, Santa Barbara Writing Minor program. One group worked on increasing equity and inclusivity in our efforts to provide sustainable solutions for business practices, while the other group worked to improve our marketing efforts through promotional flyers, Instagram analytics, LinkedIn, and communication outreach. "We found it to be both liberating and difficul...t, because we were responsible for coming up with our own deadlines and producing communications with the client each week. We feel so proud of the work we produced and the relationships we fostered with the Green Business Program of Santa Barbara County. This opportunity taught us teamwork, organization, and time management skills which we will be able to use in future projects and post graduation", stated one of the groups. Stay tuned! We look forward to sharing and using their wonderful work including infographics, themed Instagram stories, email and post templates, press releases, flyers, grant research, as well as reaching out to a list of businesses that would be a good fit for our program. Also, now because of them, we have a Linkedin page! Check it out here: https://www.linkedin.com//the-green-business-program-of-s/ Interested in volunteering with us or learning more about how we worked with the UCSB students? Grants for Teachers for Environmental Projects Apply for Care for Our Earth Grants by Monday, November 9 SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. The Santa Barbara County Education Office (SBCEO), Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District (APCD), and the Santa Barbara County Water Agency (SBCWA) are pleased to announce the start of the application period for the 2020-2021 Care For Our Earth Grants. The grants are funded by APCD and SBCWA and implemented by SBCEO. Teachers c...an apply online: http://s.sbceo.org/CFOE. Applications are due by the end of the day on Monday, November 9. Santa Barbara County K-12 public school teachers are encouraged to apply for this year’s $300 mini-grants to enhance students’ grasp of and interest in concepts related to water conservation and air quality. The grant partners understand that this school year presents unique challenges, and partners are excited to see the creative project ideas presented in the applications. APCD and SBCWA are interested in funding a select number of more involved, curriculum-focused projects that would be eligible for larger grant awards. We enjoy working with local teachers and students to expand understanding about air quality, said Aeron Arlin Genet, APCD Director. With respiratory health and air quality being top of mind at this time, we look forward to seeing teachers’ ideas on ways for children to broaden their understanding about air quality and health. Teachers in county classrooms always design wonderful, creative projects to inspire students to learn about how to conserve water and care for the Earth, said Matthew Young, Water Agency Manager. The Water Agency is pleased to participate in funding these projects in cooperation with our partners. The 2019-2020 Care For Our Earth grants paid for 27 projects at 21 schools in Santa Barbara County. In the last 10-plus years since the program started, these grants have funded 309 projects at nearly every school district in the county. Previous recipients have worked with their students to, among other projects, replace lawn with a sustainable garden on campus, test and compare car exhaust levels, create solar-powered ovens, map safe routes to walk and bike to school, compose songs about saving energy and water, capture rain water for reuse, learn about bicycle safety, and monitor classroom energy use. These grants enable innovative educators to create and teach lessons on environmental issues that impact the world, said Santa Barbara County Superintendent of Schools, Susan Salcido. We are grateful for the agencies who partner with us each year to support engaging experiences in the area of environmental education. The Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District is providing grant funds to benefit public health by cost-effectively replacing old, high-polluting equipment with newer, cleaner equipment earlier than required by regulation or through normal attrition. The grant funds come from the California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) Carl Moyer Program, Community Air Protection Program, Funding Agricultural Replacement Measures for Emission Reductions (FARMER) Program, and Califor...nia Department of Motor Vehicles surcharge revenue. These grant programs generally follow CARB 2017 Carl Moyer Program Guidelines, Community Air Protection Project Guidelines, FARMER Guidelines, or other CARB guidelines. All funded projects in the following six project categories must comply with the requirements found within the guidelines for the specific program, including cost-effectiveness thresholds. The 2020 Clean Air Grants program is accepting applications until October 23, please contact [email protected] with any questions. For more information, visit https://www.ourair.org/grants/
