The hidden history of Market Square Mall: from department store to a hub for #BlackOwned businesses. The building at 322 Harbour Way was originally constructed ...in 1924 as an open floor plan department store. In the 1940s-1960s it was home to a Breuners Furniture store on the first floor and a dance studio on the second floor. By the mid-1970s these tenants had closed or relocated. The building remained vacant until the early 1980s when it was renovated, split up into 24 individual storefronts, and reopened as the Market Square Mall. For the past 30+ years, the Market Square Mall has been home to many Black-owned enterprises specializing in products and services that are reflective and supportive of the communities they serve. select post from Richmond Main Street's newsletter 05/27/20 Gratitude + Black and Brilliant West Contra Costa County Charter Schools will be hosting Black and Brilliant, a special Zoom celebration to honor Black High School Seniors on Thursday, May 28, from 6-7pm. Many community, parent, and school leaders have contributed to this event. One very special contributor is Ms. Ghaliyah Roberts-Palmer proprietress of Gratitude, an Afrocentric gift shop in Downtown Richmond. The Bl...ack and Brilliant planning committee wanted to ensure local black-owned businesses would benefit from the event where possible. As a result, they contracted with Ms. Ghaliyah to provide the African 2020 Graduation Stoles. Senior recipients were super excited and proud to receive a stole that represented not only her achievement, but also her culture and heritage! Shop Gratitude: Order by phone (510) 680-5266 or email [email protected] Orders Available: Via curbside pickup, delivery, and shipping. Virtual tours of the shop and products also available via appointment.
