Although Congress abolished slavery in the District of Columbia in 1862, and President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation ended the practice of slavery... in rebellious states in 1863, at war’s end in 1865 the question of slavery had not been resolved at the national level. It wasn't until December 6, 1865 (155 years ago) when Georgia became the 27th state needed to ratify the 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and the abolishment of slavery. #CivilWar #13th #MyCalVet #CalVetConnect

Barbara turns 102! Today we celebrated the 102nd birthday of one of our most beloved home members. Barbara was one of the first female Marines and trained pilots during WWII! She has such an amazing story, which was documented in her biography "A Worthwhile Life". She didn't want a big to do for her birthday today, but she did enjoy a morning FaceTime call with her family and a chocolate creme brulee for her birthday treat! Barbara is still sharp as a tack and it is so inspiring to hear her incredible stories. She attributes her longevity to eating healthy while growing up on the farm. Happy Birthday Barbara!

Yesterday we celebrated Paul and his 13 plus years of service as a home member helper in our Therapeutic Activities (T.A.) Department. Paul has done it all for T.A., from working as a deputy to creating flyers for events and running the evening movies, Paul was always the go to to guy! Even though he’s retiring from his duties, he promises to be by the office at least once a week! Thank you Paul for your hard work and dedication to your fellow veterans and the Veterans Home of California-Yountville staff. You are the absolute best and will truly be missed!

They say the USS Hornet is haunted. Want to see for yourself? Two small flashlights, resting several feet apart on the darkened mess deck, suddenly lit up.... A third flashlight, at the opposite end of the room, joined in. All by themselves. Did they really go on and off all by themselves? Two members of the CalVet team experienced the USS Hornet last weekend.
