BREAST CHANGES Photo // @bloomsinthefield When you’re pregnant, breast tissue for making milk increases, accounting for the size increase you experience during that time. On day 3-4 after birth when your milk transitions from colostrum to mature milk, your breasts engorge. This means extra blood (hello veins) and fluid fill the breast to support making milk. This additional blood and fluid are what help make you aware of that full breast feeling before each feeding. Your ut...erus doesn’t tell your breasts how many babies were born, so the body is prepared to make milk for 1, 2, or even 3 babies and often initially makes more milk than is needed. Around 6-8 weeks, your hormones shift and the extra blood and fluid in your breasts go away (not your milk supply decreasing). You may no longer feel that full/empty sensation between feeds, but still be able to see lots of milk, because your body knows baby is on a full milk diet and going through multiple back to back growth spurts. You may occasionally engorge if you go too long between feedings or if you skip a pump session. Between 11-14 weeks, your body has finally figured out how many babies it is feeding based on how often the breast is emptied. Your breasts will go back to their prepregnancy size while still making just enough milk for baby. Congratulations on your mom boobs. They no longer feel full/empty, making them feel like pancakes and leaking often slows or stops. You have not lost your milk supply, your body is more efficient at making milk and will consistently make what is routinely emptied. You are still maintaining a full supply as long as you’re continuing to feed on demand or (routinely pump). Don’t be alarmed when these changes happen. This is the normal process that every body will go through. Pregnancy + Breastfeeding Photo of @chaneensaliee by @imogenfreeland Breastfeeding going well and all of a sudden you feel like your milk is gone? Go pee on a stick. A drastic drop in milk supply when breastfeeding has been going well can be a sign of pregnancy, even if your period hasn’t come back yet. Research shows it is safe to continue breastfeeding while pregnant and does not increase the risk of miscarriage. So there no reason to wean unless you’re a high risk pregn...ancy (if you are told by your health care provider that you can’t have sex, you shouldn’t breastfeed. If it’s safe to have sex, it’s safe to continue breastfeeding.) If so you are not alonefar from it. Key points to remember when breastfeeding and pregnant: * Milk will shift from mature milk back to colostrum around 14-20 weeks of your pregnancy to prepare for the birth. Babies under 6 months may not get enough milk from the breast alone while toddler eating solids may do fine. Monitor weight gain for babies under 1 year * Colostrum is saltier than mature milk. Some nurslings are fine with the taste shift and others may self wean * Aim for a total of about 600 to 800 extra calories 300 for the fetus and 300 to 500 for milk production. * Nipples may become extremely tender during pregnancy, especially at the beginning, due to hormone changes * Breastfeeding aversion while pregnant is normal (feelings of stress or anxiety or wanting to stop breastfeeding) * If your toddler always nurses to sleep, you may want to find other sleep routines to make putting older one to sleep easier when you have the new baby. * As your belly grows, you may need to experiment with new breastfeeding positions. Follow SLP/IBCLC Julie Matheney / @lalactation for more breastfeeding info + support and check out our online ‘Breastfeeding Basics’ course taught by Julie herself by clicking the link in our bio or visiting GraceFull.com/online-classes for more info #GraceFull

FETAL POSITIONING Optimal fetal positioning is something that many pregnant people worry about. However there are many maneuvers to do to optimize your baby being in the right position. Some of these include: keeping active, having regular visits with your prenatal provider, considering Acupuncture and Chiropractic care, Sobada, yoga (look into the cat and cow position!), and other types of exercise modalities. In addition, spinning babies are positions that help determine... the position of your baby(s). Was there any particular method you were advised, or that you found worked for you? #GraceFull Check out https://spinningbabies.com/ for more information! Tongue and Lip Ties Our tongues need to go from side to side, up and down, and in and out. A tongue tie is when the connective tissue that connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth is too short or tight and doesn’t allow the tongue to move in these directions. You usually can’t tell if a tongue is tied just by looking at it unless it’s a very tight tie to the tip of the tongue. Some people have that little connective tissue under the tongue and it moves just fine. In ot...hers you can’t see it because it’s all the way at the back of the underside of the tongue and you can only find the tie by lifting up on the tongue. Obvious tongue ties are when the tissue comes all the way to the tip of the tongue and makes the end of the tongue look like a heart. Symptoms of tongue tie include difficulty latching or staying latched at the breast, painful/pinching latch that doesn’t go away with better positioning, damaged nipples, low milk supply, long feedings, gassy/colicky baby, making a clicking sound while feeding, reflux, recurrent mastitis, infant mouth breathing or snoring. Did you know tongue ties affect between 2%-16% of infants, the majority being males? For more evidence based breast/body/baby feeding info, check out #GraceFull IBCLC Julie Matheney over at @lalactation Photo // @j_wattsphotography #tongueties #latching #breastfeeding #normalizebirth #gracefullbirth #gracefullbirthing #empoweredbirth #childbirtheducation #empoweryourplan #birthphotography #motherly #igmotherhood #mamamuse #expectful #bumpbirthandbeyond #nestedmag #mothermusemag #birthcenter #hospitalbirth #naturalbirth #unmedicatedbirth #fedisbest #birthplan #iwishihadknown #doula #midwife #birthteam #homebirth #postpartumjourney

A daddy-daughter kind of love Skin to skin is the gentlest way to transition your baby from the intra-uterine world to the extra-uterine world. Baby's skin absorbs antibodies from your skin (either parent), increasing the immune system. Your baby is soothed by the familiar sound of your beating heart. Also the baby's temperature is regulated when contact is made belly to belly, and chest to chest. Oxytocin is released, early feeding behaviors are explored and initiated. All... this is the magic of the Golden Hour after birth. Pearl being born in the waters by @daddy.twinlife En caul or Call babies are born with the amniotic sac still intact around the baby. These babies are considered caul bearers and are very special, and have been said to have a special sight, or destined for greatness. In the past the amniotic sac was kept as a keepsake for luck. Because this is a rare occurrence as low as 1/80,000 babies is born en caul, if your baby is one of them I am sure it will feel special not only... because it’s your baby, but what a gentle birth you may have had. Many care providers are quick to break the water thinking that the labor will progress more quickly, however this is not always the case. Midwives are less likely to intervene in the natural process making this type of birth possible. DELAYED CORD CLAMPING Delaying umbilical cord clamping comes naturally for most out of hosptial providers as we have been doing this with birth over the last few decades. We know how much this can assist the newborn during the transition from inside the body and out into the world. Remember that your baby is getting oxygen from the cord on the inside and as long as it is still pulse will continue to get the same blood and nutrients outside. When there is no emergency and ev...erything continues to be low risk GraceFull’s normal time to cut the cord is after the placenta is born. We want to make sure baby gets all those amazing stem cells and nutrients, give time for you to ‘go slow’ and take in this big life transition and bond. (Because really, what’s the rush?) If you would like to collect cord blood for banking even then the delay is about 5 minutes which gives the baby a good time to transition. More than that can create a challenge in the ability to collect enough stem cells to put in the bag as they have all gone to baby. What other ways did you transition your baby? #GraceFull Midwife // @tinney.amy Photo // @douladianne #gracefullbirth #cordclamping #delaycutting #placenta #umbilicalcord #newborn #transition #extendedfeeding #gracefullbirthing #ibclc #internationalboardcertifiedlactationconsultant #lactationconsultant #breastfeedingsupport #postpartumjourney #motherhoodjourney #motherly #mothermag #mothermusemag #nested #expectful #theeverymom #everymom #igmotherhood #motherhoofthroughig #bumpbirthandbeyond #healthypregnancy #inspirepregnancy #postpartum #fourthtrimester
