George Pinnell Golf Academy 09.06.2021

World #1, Rose Zhang, continues her strong 2020/2021 run at this week’s Symetra Tour Copper Rock Championship in Hurricane, Utah. Rose got off to a good start today with a -4 under 68 to T3 going into tomorrow’s 2nd round. RZ birdied 5 of the first 6 holes to post a 34 on the par 37 front nine before posting a -1 under on the backside for 34. Her only mistakes were bogies on 2 and 7. Bailey Tardy and Natalie Sheary are leading at -6 66’s! Stay tuned for Rose’s 2nd and 3rd round score in the next 2 days. Rose just came off of a good showing at LPGA LOTTE tournament in Kapolei, Oahu last week with T33.

Congratulations to 12 year old Alice Zhao who finished in 2nd place in the AJGA JUNIOR ALL-STAR AT FIREWHEEL Golf Park, Garland, Tx. Alice shot 74-71 (145). Ryleigh Knaub, Winter Springs, FL, shot 74-70 (144) to win first place . Alice, today, replaced her U.S. Kid’s clubs with her new Callaway Apex irons, McDaddy 5 wedges and New Callaway Hybrids and fairway clubs. Jude Lee, finished in a tie for 17 at 77-83 (160) while Lauren Dubs Lee shot 89-75 (164) for 23rd place. Congratulations to Alice, Jude and Dub’s for their good performance in Texas last week.

Maile Chang, victorious in the SDJGA at Reidy Creek GC, Escondido, CA. The talented 8 year old shot a +2, 30 to best Catherine Lilly Chen by a shot. Maile has been working hard on her game taking on AJGA player’s at Coto de Caza GC, her home course.

Meet 8 year old Beverley Cui from Northern California! Bev, won the IMG Qualifer In Las Vegas last weekend, to win entry into the IMG World Tournament in San Diego this summer. Bev, scorched the field with a -2 (70) to win by SEVEN STROKES!

Rose Zhang, shown with caddies during a light moment in between shots in 2nd round play at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. RZ is tied for the lead going into the final round on Saturday at Augusta National. Rose had a difficult day but kept her poise during a cool, windy day in Augusta. Rose shot an even round par to go along with her opening -1 to share the lead at -1. Amy Alston-Nicholas (Callaway Golf)told RZ’s Coach, George Pinnell, that she felt par today was playing at 74 or 75. Tomorrow will be a prep day at Augusta National, and all of The ’s fan’s will be pulling for her.

RZ is currently tied for 2nd (play suspended because of weather). First round will conclude tomorrow morning and Rose will tee it as soon as the first round is finished.

World Number 1, The arriving on the practice grounds of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. Rose, as always, is looking forward to the competitive field at the ANWA, and looking forward to teeing it up in the first round on Wednesday. The top 30 will make the cut and move to Augusta National for the weekend. NBC will televise the ANWA from 9am to 12:30pm on Saturday. Good luck to Rose and the field.

Crystal Wang, a junior at the University of Illinois, prepping for her return to the Champagne-Urbana campus after a long layoff due to the pandemic. She will fly back tomorrow. The Illini, Coached by Renee Slone, will travel to a week of practice prior to the Spring season. Crystal has been a strong player for the Illini in her 3 years on the team and has worked with Pinnell since 8th grade.

Let’s give a shout-out to Angie Zhang, a 2023 graduate (I hope) for obtaining her Toyota Tour card for 2021 by placing 5th of 93 players in the Toyota Tour Qualifying School at the Morongo GC at Tukwet. Angie has been working extremely hard to improve her game, and she has, so she can compete for a spot on a D1 roster following graduation from high school. AZ shot a solid 77-76 (153) to be one of 14 players to earn playing privileges on the Toyota Tour! Next up: improve performance on TTC and gain playing privileges on AJGA!

Congratulations to Emily Song for her strong play in the SCPGA Junior Tour event at St Mark Executive GC. Emily, playing in the Girls 9-11, shot a 64 and finished in 6th place. Emily got off to a slow start with bogeys on 1,2 and 4 before making back-to-back birdies on 7 and 8 for a +1 on the front side. A double and 3 bogies on the backside gave her a 64. Congratulations to Archwin Sangsurasak, known by his Coach as, The Arch, for his playoff victory, in the SCPGA Junior Tour Boys 9-11 at St. Mark Executive GC! The Arch fired a 61 on the par 58 course. The Arch got off to a difficult start with a bogey on the first hole followed by double bogey’s on 4 and 7. The Arch (also known as Uber to his coach) finished strong by shooting -2 under in his remaining 11 holes to tie with Wes Sirinian. Congratulations to Chloe Lam in her outstanding performance at the AJGA JUNIOR ALL-STAR INVITATIONAL at Jimmie Austin OU GC, Norman, OK. Chloe finished in a tie for 4th place with solid rounds of 71-70-73 (214). Chloe stayed in the top 10 all week and threatened to finish in 2nd place if not for a difficult finish of 3 bogies in the last 6 holes that offset her 2 birdies. Chloe has shown a lot of growth this year. The cream always rises to the top Rose Zhang came all the way back from 25th place early in the first round to win THE PING INVITATIONAL in an amazing display of true grit. Rose fired a final round no bogey 67 (-5) to finish at -4 to edge out Michelle Zhang by a shot (-3). Rose shot 70-75-67 (212). Following her 75, she texted her Coach, George Pinnell, and simply stated, it was a battlefield today. Lynn Lim, was the only player in the top 15 who had a clean score...card on the most difficult Karsten Creek GC, in the 2nd round. Rose continued her 2020 run after winning the U.S. WOMEN’S AMATEUR, The Rolex Girls Championship (birdied the final 4 holes), was the Low Amateur at the ANA Inspiration with a record setting -8 (beat Michelle Wie’s -7) and finished 11th in the ANA a LPGA Major. Congratulations to Gabby Kano to finished second in the AJGA Junior Open in Fayetteville, NC! Gabby shot 77-68 (145) in blustery, rain and made her 1st hole-in-one. Gabby shot a solid -2 under par on her back nine to secure second place behind Amanda Sambach, Davidson, NC., by a shot. Kaitlyn You, shot 75-77 (152) to finish in 9th place while Euna Lee shot 81-78 (159) to place 22nd. Charissa Shang continues her good play by firing 70-74 (144) to finish tied for 2nd at the ...AJGA ST. Francisville Area Foundation Junior at the Bluffs in St Francisville, LA., outside of New Orleans. Sophie Zhang-Murphy, struggled a bit at The Heather Farr Classic where she shot an opening round 76, uncharacteristic, of the #9 Rolex Ranked Girl. SZM, came back with a respectable 74 to combine the 76-54 (150) for 16th place. Congratulations to Tiffany Chang for her victory in the desert at the Welk Resort. Tiffany shot 68 on the par 72 layout. Emily Song won the Girls 9-11 group with a +1 over par 32 while Anne Yu shot 39 and finished in 7th place. Arch Sangsurasak, placed second in the Boys 9-11 Age with a 9 hole score of 40. At the General Old Fall event, Jackie Liu shot 86 and finished in 3rd place in the Girls 15-18 age. Audrey I’m, finished in 7th with an 85 in the Girls 12-14 Age. At the PT 2-Day Soboba event, Alice Zhao, shot 74-70 (144) to finish in a tie for 4th, while Jude Lee shot 75-74 (149) to place 12th. Bella Ly, shot 74-81 (155) to finish Tie 10. Mark Zhang, shot 73-78 (151) to finish Tie 25 while Remy Ly, shot 81-75 (156) to place Tie 32. Overall, it was a good weekend for players from the GPGA.
