Tuesday, May 5 marks - "Summer Begins" on the lunisolar calendar. It was a very important day for agrarian societies. Perhaps it has new meaning for us in 2020. In the Classic text , we're told that: "The 3 months of Summer denote abundance and blossoming." In a literal sense, this represents the leaves spreading out and flowers blooming. ... In a functional sense, the "abundance and blossoming" are driven by yang releasing and becoming fully manifest. It is a crucial time of year and our behavior will have an effect on our health in the coming months. In terms of yin and yang, indoors is yin and outdoors is yang - sedentary is yin and active movement is yang. We should become more active and spend more time outdoors. We can still practice social distancing. Getting sunshine is particularly beneficial in the Beginning of Summer. At this time of summer, the days are longer and the sun is brighter, but we haven't reached a time where the weather is oppressive. Later in the passage we're reminded: "Let the mind have no anger. Stimulate beauty and have your elegance perfected. Let your qi flow, as if what you love were located outside." Summer should be a time of beauty, of laughter and of joy. It's not a time of anger nor fear. It's not a time for hibernation. Please get active. Get out in the sun. Be safe. Be happy.
