Photos by Daniel Bianchetta 10AM Sightings- 10 Killer Whales(CA51s and CA51As) (breaching and spy hopping) All Day Sightings- 10 Killer Whales, 5 Humpback Whales, 300 Risso’s Dolphins (Casper)

We saw many different species of animals yesterday! Our 10AM trip saw 1 Humpback Whale, 500 Risso’s Dolphins, 500 Pacific White Sided Dolphins, and 200 Northern Right Whale Dolphins! Our afternoon trip saw 2 Humpback Whales, a mother and a calf, and 100 Risso’s Dolphins! We also do marine science research on our boats and help contribute data on Humpback Whales! Each Humpback Whale has a unique fluke (tail) which functions like a fingerprint, so we are able to identify them e...ach by photo! You can also submit Your Own photos of the Humpback Whales to Happywhale.com when you come out on one of our whale trips at 10AM & 2:30PM, or for the All-Day Orca trips starting at 8AM! A stunning day out on the water yesterday! We saw 10 Orcas, 70 Risso’s Dolphins (with Casper the white albino or leucistic dolphin) and 5 Black-Footed Albatross! White dolphin Casper is unique because Risso’s Dolphins are usually grey in color and are often covered in scarring from their prey, the squid, darkening over time! Thanks to the California Killer Whale Project we were able to identify some of the Orcas we saw as CA54, CA177, CA20, and the CA212s (group of 4), and a...re working on identifying the others! Killer Whales are continuing to be in the Monterey Bay area until late May, often followed by the tell tale Black-footed albatross which scavenge any leftover food the Orca may leave behind after hunting! To see some of these amazing marine animals come out on one of our tours at 10AM or 2:30PM, or even an 8AM all day trip for those looking for some adventure! Check out this beautiful drone photo of some orcas we watched last week, taken by Mark Girardeau (from a friend's inflatable near us)! We saw the CA122Bs, CA45s, and CA46D (ID's by California Killer Whale Project ). CA45 and CA46 were likely very close associates and used to be seen often in Monterey Bay. When CA46 passed away, CA46D was adopted by CA45! CA45 was first sighted by owner Nancy Black in 1992. CA45B is very easy to recognize because of his wavy fin and an unusua...lly narrow saddle patch, compared to other Bigg's transient whales. CA122B has very large eye patches, which also makes this whale recognizable! It was such a treat to see these rarely seen orcas, especially together! We have never observed these whales interacting, although since we do not see them very often, who knows how much they are together! *Note: those interested in using their own drones in Monterey Bay can contact us for information on private charters. Check out this great article where owner and Marine Biologist Nancy Black was interviewed about the rebounding Harbor Porpoise population in Monterey Bay. She was instrumental in the early 1990s in helping ban gill nets, which killed thousands of Harbor Porpoise, birds, and Sea Otters. We often see Harbor Porpoise on our trips - they are shy but amazing animals! We are happy to know that their population is continuing to increase since the gill net ban. https://www.mercurynews.com//big-increase-in-porpoises-of/

FRIENDLY WHALE TODAY! This whale made several close passes to the boat, spy hopped, and stared straight at our passengers on our 10AM trip! The boat was in neutral and the whale approached us for a trip of a lifetime!
