LG Chem to offer 80 to 120 kWh batteries South Korean chemical engineering company LG Chem have announced its intention to be a supplier of larger batteries to car manufacturers who are interested in longer range EVs. LG Chem is targeting a 300-500 km range battery pack. The company contends that currently most EVs with their 100-150 km range have a limited appeal and that hinders the potential for market growth. Currently, only the Tesla Model S possesses a truly long-range battery pack.

Magnesium ion battery shows potential for Electric Vehicles Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago have taken a significant step toward the development of a battery that could outperform the lithium-ion technology used in electric cars. They have shown they can replace the lithium ions, each of which carries a single positive charge, with magnesium ions, which have a plus-two charge, in battery-like chemical reactions, using an electrode with a structure like those in many of today's devices.

Volkswagen Group may shift to a single lithium ion battery cell design for all of its electrified vehicles. Heinz-Jakob Neusser, VW's board member in charge of development, says the group is targeting a 66 percent cost reduction with a design that would be packaged into modules customized for each vehicle.

Tesla is upgrading its Model S in the latest move to make the high-end sedan stand out in an increasingly competitive luxury car market. The company is discontinuing production of the entry level edition of the rear wheel drive Model S with a 60 kWh battery pack and a range of 208 miles. The new base level Model S will be called the 70D.... It will feature a larger battery pack of 70 kWh with a greater range of 240 miles. The 70D will also be an all-wheel drive Model S thanks to dual motors. With a starting price of $74,900, the 70D will cost roughly $5,000 more than the previous base version of the Model S.

The classic Volkswagen Camper van could be revived as a battery-electric vehicle, according to company board member Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser. Speaking at the New York show, Neusser revealed that VW engineers and designers were working on a new Camper van concept using a small electric motor driving the front wheels and battery packs stored under the floor.
