Gorgeous and Green

I wasn’t sure I was going to be a mother. It’s more complicated than I can even give words to but I always imagined having two lives, one where I was on my own being a working woman with freedom and a creative life, and the other life where I had children and I taught them everything I’d learned about life because it’s so damn hard and I had such a difficult time navigating it as a young person. Throw in a relationship, multiple professional careers, a supportive partner, som...e infertility, a few businesses, the fact that I only have one life that I know of, and boom, I’m a mother. I try my best to fulfill both imagined lives when possible, but it’s definitely difficult and not exactly how I’d imagined. Not sure how my mother juggled both lives, she was not just a wonderful and thoughtful single parent, but also a well respected Chicana feminist academic and educator. She’s still making waves and doing her thing. I guess that’s the point. Make waves and do your thing and if you can share the positive insights you’ve learned so far about life with other humans somehow, I think you’ve done what you came here to do. You don’t have to be a mother to excel at life, but you can have the same goals.
