What if it’s not 2020? . What if it’s us? What if we are being faced with the outcomes of our unsustainable lifestyles? Disasters are screaming in our faces, instead of humming under the surface, muffled by our daily lives and distractionsmuffled enough to ignore completely. .... What if this is the direct result of us refusing to live in harmony with the land we have stolen? Mined? Drilled? Manipulated? Filled with our non-compostable trash? For example, here in California, Indigenous tribes lived here for 15,000 years before it was taken from them. They took only what they needed, gave back to the land, and administered controlled burns to facilitate new growth and prevent out of control wildfires. These prescribed fires fixed an entire ecosystem of issues, but was pretty much all stopped by the 20th century. . There’s no denying that 2020 will be a year to remember. A global pandemic, unprecedented weather patterns, a demand for social justice, an uncovering of our socioeconomic issues, the problems with capitalism... It’s convenient to blame a period in time. I believe the good intention is to acknowledge this moment as a bonding moment where we all recognize nothing is safe. 2020, as a breaking point. I think we can all agree that January 1st, 2021 isn’t going to magically be better. My hope is that we will collectively learn the hard, scary lessons and act accordingly. I don’t mean to be doom and gloom, but what if we don’t see a change in these events until we learn our truths and really implement changes? Skin intuition . Intuition is the ability to understand something without conscious reasoning. It’s a KNOWING. Society teaches us to look outside of ourselves to know what is going on with our bodies. And yes, modern medicine IS important and if something is amiss, you should probably go get it checked out. But what if we tuned in? Truly tuned in and listened to all that the body has to say. I am speaking generally here, but the industry I work in, the beauty industry, is par...ticularly full of interruptions and distractions of the natural intuitive process. . My job as a Holistic Esthetician/Plant-Based Skin Therapist/Whatever-you-want-to-call-me, is to decipher what is going on and empower you to listen to the feedback your skin is giving you. The skin is a reflection as to what is going on inside the body. This is taught in both Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. This goes back to when we were first learning about our beautiful bodies, creating terms for anatomy and recognizing the patterns within and how we react to our environmentsessentially how we fit into the sacred geometry that inhabits this universe. Yet we have come so far from this notion in today’s world. It’s that western throw a band-aid on it! philosophy. Our body systems work both individually and together, in great harmony. I was working in the Mission when I first learned about @skinremedysf . Justine came and saw me for a facial. She hesitated telling me she was an esthetician, but I somehow shook her down. She told me about what she was doing at Skin Remedy, mixing botanicals and raw ingredients in the treatment room, and I HAD to know more. I looked her up and then hounded her for work. It was a trek for me to get to, but every day was worth it. The way the Skin Remedy team approached faci...als and treating the skin was revolutionary in my career. My clients were leaving glowing vs inflamed and red. Before Skin Remedy, I remember people leaving and me being nervous that I had harmed their skin. The treatments were aggressive and that’s what they were looking for. The approach at Skin Remedy was so natural and beautifully obvious. Justine was developing @botniaskincare long before I came along, but it was so fun to watch it grow and develop into the booming line it is today. . 2020 is a year of evolution. I am sad to see the doors of this San Francisco-garden-spa-oasis close. I met some of my favorite people in that little studio, clients and co-workers alike. It can be hard to find like-minded individuals in this industry. Many spas and skincare studios are filled with toxic behavior and I have been lucky to work alongside some of the most lovely, down-to-earth individuals, Skin Remedy was no different. I have so many FUN memories from my time at Skin Remedy, piñata parties, flower crowns, horseback riding, accidental sleepovers, and countless giggle fits.
