Today is Medal of Honor Day. The U.S. Coast Guard salutes all recipients of this honor for their heroism including our very own, Signalman First Class Douglas A...lbert Munro. Munro received the Medal of Honor for his actions on September 27, 1942, when he led the extrication of a force of U.S. Marine Corps whose position had been overrun by Japanese forces by using the boat that he was piloting to draw enemy fire and shield a landing craft filled with Marines. In his memory, three American warships - among other things - were named after Munro: USCG Cutter Munro (WMSL-755)(active) and USCG Cutter Douglas Munro (WHEC-724)(scheduled to be decommissioned), and U.S. Navy USS Douglas A. Munro (DE-422)(decommissioned). #MedalOfHonorDay #SemperParatus #USCG

Last week, Master Chief Bushey and I had the privilege of visiting with the maintainers, support staff, and duty crews at U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak who operate aircraft in an area of responsibility that covers more than 4 million square miles! Bravo Zulu!

Earlier today Air Station Traverse City launched two helicopters to respond to reports of over 60 ice fishermen stranded on an ice floe near Sturgeon Bay, WI. T...he ice had broken free from land, and high winds associated with the approaching winter storm system quickly pushed the floe farther away from shore. Ice continued to crack into smaller sections throughout the crews' time on scene. The helicopter crews lowered rescue swimmers to the ice to help coordinate the rescue as local first responders and other Coast Guard ice rescue assets arrived. After additional assets arrived, the helos continued conducting overflights of the area looking for signs of distress and vectoring ice rescue boats to groups of shanties. Thanks to all our local partners for their swift response and efficient work in evacuating over 60 people from the ice! No ice is "safe" ice. Always check the weather before heading out, use the buddy system, and wear your life jacket. Ensure you have a reliable form of communication such as a radio as well. The more prepared you are, the better! #USCGGreatLakes #greatlakeswintersafety
