"The payoffs are numerous. Electrification to decarbonize vehicles, home heating, and industries would proceed 60 percent faster than the most ambitious U.S. electrification scenarios projected by the Electric Power Research Institute. Renewable energy installation would also accelerate, pushing the share of zero-carbon energy on the continent from 40 percent of the power supply in 2017, to 64 percent in 2035, and 74 percent in 2050. Nuclear energy’s contribution would fall by nearly half to just 11 percent of generation in 2050mostly due to its higher cost, according to GEIDCO director of energy planning Gao Yi. Overall, energy-related greenhouse gas emissions would drop 80 percent by 2050, relative to a business-as-usual scenarioeven as average power generating costs drop."

Power Link doesn't just involve building the world's largest solar farm, which will be easily visible from space. The project also anticipates construction of what will be the world's longest submarine power cable, which will export electricity all the way from outback Australia to Singapore via a 4,500-kilometre (2,800 miles) high-voltage direct current (HVDC) network.

A cattle station halfway between Alice Springs and Darwin is set to house the world’s largest solar farm, with energy generated from the project to ultimately power Singapore.

We are effectively creating a new industrial sector, Alex Tancock, managing director of Intercontinental Energy, the lead investor in the project, said in a media release. The falling costs of wind and solar power, our carefully selected locations, and the vast scale of the facility we are building, all mean it’s inevitable that we will be able to produce green fuels that are cost competitive with fossil fuels."
