At Glen Park Montessori we look at what might be done to help children understand and feel, authentically, that they are a very real part of our natural world. Being part of something develops into a deeper understanding and our wish is to send them along their life path with gratitude and love for this gentle place we call Earth. We begin with bringing as much of the natural world into the classroom as we possibly can. https://glenpark-montessori.com//embracing-the-natural-wo/

Glen Park Montessori has a lovely outdoor area with a redwood tree that the children often experience during their time at school! <3 "When the outdoor environment is well prepared, the child becomes free to move about and interact with nature. She will be able to develop his voluntary movements, she will be able to develop her sense of sight, hearing and smell. Most important, she will be able to learn the names of all these experiences if an adult can name them for her. In time, other activities will benefit the child and will deepen her relationship with nature." https://montessoriguide.org/the-childs-innate-love-for-natu

"An education capable of saving humanity is no small undertaking; it involves the spiritual development of man, the enhancement of his value as an individual, and the preparation of young people to understand the times in which they live." ~Maria Montessori

Do you sing or play music with your child? At Glen Park Montessori we do sing and sometimes play drums or listen to music, we find it both fun and enriching! And did you know a new study from October 2020 found that children with musical training have increased activation in cognitive control areas of their brains and perform better on auditory and visual memory tasks than children without musical training? https://www.verywellfamily.com/music-training-improves-memo

Part of the fallout from being cooped up inside for months on end and trying to avoid others during the coronavirus pandemic is that young children have not been allowed to play as much and in the ways to which they have been accustomed and that’s a big problem for kids. Children today who are experiencing the coronavirus pandemic need lots of imaginative play opportunities to help them make sense of the radical changes that have affected so many aspects of their lives. And once kids do return to in-person school, they are going to need a lot of time to play to process all the changes they’ve been through. This is what will help them regain a sense of security for going forward. https://www.washingtonpost.com//play-deprivation-during-p/

The classroom is bursting with creative activity, the children are involved with so many projects that inspire them! Dr. Maria Montessori viewed creativity within the context of total development intellectual, artistic, emotional and physical. Her plotting of child development traces the most significant of creative endeavors the making of the personality, the construction of the child's self.

The 7 ways music education benefits students! <3 1.) Language Processing - students who are struggling with language and reading skills could especially benefit from musical training 2.) Memory - children with musical training showed better verbal memory than their peers 3.) Math - research has also shown a link between music education and success in school math... 4.) Self-awareness - the precision and attention required to play an instrument the instant feedback loop that requires you to adjust your own performance encourages an ongoing surveillance of yourself, 5.) Social Skills - when you participate in music in a community or a school, you develop shared memories during musical activities. It’s a bonding experience 6.) Academic Success - with all the benefits that music brings to kids’ language, math, memory and self-assessment, it’s little surprise that there is a strong correlation between music and general academic success. 7.) Long-term success - students with music training tend to rank higher in common measures of long-term success such as educational attainment and income <3 <3 <3 #musiceducation #kidsplayingmusic https://www.greatschools.org//7_ways_music_boosts_the_bra/

Happy Martin Luther King Day ! On this holiday, people can reflect and remember his actions and ponder how their own actions can affect change. To quote King, What are you doing for others? Most have a misconception of the purpose of education, and that most of the ‘brethren’ think education should equip them with the proper instruments of exploitation so that they can forever trample over the masses. King stresses, education has a two-fold function to perform in the ...life of man and in society: the one is utility and the other is culture. Education must enable a man to become more efficient, to achieve with increasing facility the legitimate goals of her own. #martinlutherking #ihaveadream

Dr. Maria Montessori, the Italian pediatrician and visionary educator who founded the Method, believed that when children are given the freedom to choose their own learning activities a self-confident, inquisitive, creative child emerges. As it turns out, this approach, which is over 100 years old, is exactly what parents are looking for today.

Model what resilience looks like! What you say is important but it's critical to practice what you preach! Kids learn about resilience by watching adults in their lives handle tough moments, and discovering that bumps in the road aren't the end of the world. Be conscious about how you handle uncertainty in the presence of your children, whether it’s making a mistake, losing your keys, getting lost [or] burning dinner. Focus on how you handle situations that just don’t go your way. Let your child observe you not only managing it, but [also] not beating yourself up.
