Here is our school highlight of the week! Monte Vista Elementary School has a new ride that is making special deliveries to nearly 70 families in the neighborhood! This bookmobile idea was spearheaded by Crescenta Valley High School student Alden Marriott over the summer. He rallied support from the community and was able to get a van donated by Hi Star Auto Sales!... The next time you see the bookmobile, give school librarian Lisa Marriott a wave! She delivers Monte Vista books to 70 families. There are currently 1,500 circulating in the neighborhood! It wouldn’t be possible without the support from Crescenta Valley High School students who have been volunteering their time to deliver books and local community members who help sanitize and process books. If you want to highlight your school, send us a message, and share your story with us! #GUSDCares #ReadingMatters

#PressRelease Glendale Unified Resumes In-Person Athletic Conditioning GLENDALE, CA In-person athletic conditioning for fall sports resumed at Glendale Unified’s three comprehensive high schools, starting last week. Fall sports include football, cross country, water polo, volleyball, and cheer at Crescenta Valley, Glendale, and Hoover High Schools. Athletic conditioning takes place after school hours and participation is voluntary for athletes and coaches. ... Prior to resuming athletic conditioning, schools were required to submit a plan, developed in collaboration with coaches, athletic directors, school administrators, and district staff, to be approved by Glendale Unified district leadership. All plans had to meet the guidelines provided by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and the Glendale Unified School District Guidelines for Reopening Athletics. All coaches participated in a COVID-19 Protocol Training for Coaches held on October 8 and October 12, and all student athletes were required to complete an academic participation packet, which included a physical form from a doctor, prior to participating in athletic conditioning. Additionally, each school provided the district with a supervision schedule and bathroom protocol for each sport. Athletics play a vital role in promoting teamwork, improving physical and mental health, and connecting our students with their school community and with each other, said Glendale Unified Board President Dr. Armina Gharpetian. We are happy to provide our student athletes with the opportunity to resume in-person conditioning, following all health and safety protocols.

#PressRelease Horace Mann Elementary has been selected as a 2020 America's Best Urban School by the NCUST - The National Center for Urban School Transformation. The award recognizes equity and excellence for all by honoring schools that serve predominantly low-income students and exceed several performance indicators, including excellent achievement scores, high attendance rates, low suspension rates, and high graduation rates for every demographic group of students. Mann Ele...mentary was one of only 16 schools nationwide and the only school in Los Angeles County to receive this honor. The school was recognized at a virtual awards ceremony on October 13. This March, representatives from each of the winning schools will have an opportunity to present essential practices critical to their success to an audience of public school educators and leaders from across the nation at a NCUST Symposium. Our Horace Mann Elementary administrators, teachers, and staff are transforming the lives of Glendale Unified students and benefiting our community for generations to come, said Glendale Unified Board President Dr. Armina Gharpetian. My fellow Board members and I are thrilled to celebrate this much-deserved honor with our entire Mann Elementary community. Principal Rosa Alonso and our amazing teachers and staff at Mann Elementary have fostered a culture of high achievement using a collaborative, data-driven approach to teaching and learning, said Glendale Unified Superintendent Dr. Vivian Ekchian. They prove what is possible when you set high standards and maintain a relentless focus on ensuring every child has the tools they need to succeed. Horace Mann Elementary serves a diverse population of approximately 630 students in transitional kindergarten through fifth grade. The school was recognized as a California Distinguished School in both 2020 and 2018, and has previously been recognized as a Gold Ribbon School and a Title I Academic Achieving School by the California Department of Education. In 2019, Mann Elementary earned a Golden Bell Award from the California School Boards Association for implementation of their PLC Plus professional development program. Ninety-one percent of Mann Elementary students are socioeconomically disadvantaged and 56 percent are English learners. The NCUST was founded as part of the QUALCOMM Institute for Innovation and Educational Success at San Diego State University. The mission of the NCUST is to help urban school districts and their partners transform schools into institutions where all students achieve academic proficiency, evidence a love of learning, and graduate well-prepared to succeed in postsecondary education, the workplace, and their community.
