Kick off Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month by learning about the incredible Patsy Mink. Born on December 6, 1927, in Paia, Hawaii, Patsy was a force to be reckoned with. After graduating from high school as class president and valedictorian, she faced racial discrimination at two universities before graduating from the University of Hawaii in 1948. Patsy planned on pursuing medicine, but after several schools turned her down, she turned towards law and attend...ed the University of Chicago Law School. While at university, Patsy met and married graduate student John Francis Mink and had one daughter. She was not allowed to take the bar exam because of the loss of her Hawaiian residency after marriage, but challenged the biased statute and won. When Patsy faced discrimination from big law firms for her interracial marriage, she started a private practice and founded the Oahu Young Democrats in 1954. Patsy became the first Japanese-American woman to practice law in Hawaii and focused on changing discriminatory customs. In 1956, she ran for a seat in the territorial House of Representatives and won, becoming the first Japanese-American woman to serve. Through a grassroots campaign run by a staff of unpaid volunteers & her husband, she won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1964 and became the first woman of color and the first Asian-American woman elected to Congress. Throughout her service, Patsy fought for gender and racial equality, affordable childcare, and bilingual education. She helped pass legislation such as the Women's Educational Equity Act to promote gender equity in schools, and co-authored Title IX, which mandated equal treatment for women and men in education. Patsy was dedicated to issues that focused on women, children, immigrants, and minorities until her passing in 2002. Today, we remember Patsy for the educational trailblazer that she was and for the opportunities she made possible. Photo Credit: J Curnow, Flickr
