I suppose it's all a matter of perspective. Or at least a good deal of it is. Today while paying for groceries at Major Market, I was offered without asking, the senior discount. Because I am in my early 50's my first reaction was one of surprise ("Really??? Do I look old enough for that??!?") then I thought about being insulted (especially since I was wearing a face mask- I mean how many wrinkles could she even see with that thing on me?? Then again, it is 2020 and I feel a...t least 10 years older than I did on January 1st)... but then I thought " Why not?". I was, after all, shopping for a client as well as for myself so it seemed fair. When I got back to the car I took a good hard look at myself ( I had just had my hair done, so no grey showing). Though normally I can see LOTS of proof of my aging, it didn't really seem too bad with my glasses and mask on. I started to feel sad and insulted again and then I decided to change my perspective. Perhaps my cashier had been feeling generous and wanted to share the discount with me. Perhaps I had hit the store during the reserved senior shopping hours unknowingly (nope, but I have done that before by accident). Then I looked at my receipt and do you know I saved 15 bucks with that discount???? I wanted to go back in and stock up on supplies, just to get more of that generous 10% off offer! I realized it won't be the last time, obviously, that I am asked if I want a senior discount, but the first sure stunned me. Sometimes it is a matter of seeing the positive in the situation rather than assuming the worse; I am trying my hardest while avoiding aging stereotypes, to embrace my own aging process. It can sure be a challenge though. What about you? Have you come across a situation related to aging that you thought afterward was a matter of perspective? That by seeing it in a different light, seemed much better or acceptable? I remember how old my husband felt when he first received the invitation to AARP. While having my coffee this morning my mind wandered away from planning the work tasks for the day to upcoming holiday-related to-dos. I realized with the holidays looking so different this year, there was a lot I could skip! Extra baking, coordinating work holiday gatherings, shopping for party outfits, attending work-related get-togethers, extensive shopping and hosting of events. Though I thought I might grieve normalcy, and there is a lot I will miss, I actually found m...yself feeling relieved. This year has created so much stress and worry that I am more than happy to forgo the extra holiday craziness and instead focus on family, intimacy, and time to catch up with friends via chats. Time to renew physically and spiritually. Time to volunteer and serve others who need resources and cheer. I’m thinking this holiday season may be a reset button of sorts for many of us. Despite my constant desire to focus on mindfulness, I still find myself spending a lot of time lingering {my word of the weekend } in the past (memories and what if’s), as well as in the future (hopes and fears). I’m in constant training to bring myself into the present, to dwell in THAT moment, and to allow myself to feel content, even in the moment’s often imperfectness. This practice can be a huge struggle, especially in the holiday season and particularly in 2020.
