Music Makes People Happy Competition This exciting new program is designed to encourage and celebrate youth Musical and Vocal categories. Scholarships will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place at the OI level for each category. The Musical or Vocal submission shall be no longer than three minutes. The Evening Optimist Club of Gardena (popularly known as the Gardena Evening Optimist Club or GEO) is now in its 57th year of serving communities in the South Bay. We were originally sponsored by the Japanese American Optimist Club of Los Angeles (JAO) and chartered on February 18, 1964. Our membership is currently comprised of 63 members representing a cross-section of the community. Most of our members live in the immediate South Bay area, however, we do have a few active m...embers that live as far away as Las Vegas and Orange County. Our primary goal is to serve our community through projects and programs designed to develop and enrich our youth. The Club runs many programs for youth throughout the year to include the Optimist International Essay and Oratorical Contests, Visual Arts and Photography Contests, Youth Appreciation Scholarships, and Childhood Health and Wellness. GEO sponsors Boy Scout Troop 683, and we actively support the Gardena ValleyJCI, A Sense of Home, Together We Rise, and the Optimist YouthHomes and Family Services. The GEO Essay Contest Committee is now seeking entries for the Optimist International 2020-2021 Essay Contest. The contest affords young people the opportunity to write about their own opinions regarding the world in which they live. The approach can encompass a young person's personal experience, the experience of their country or a more historical perspective.
