Dr. Damper checking in with another throwback Wednesday post this finely aged selection of suspension bits focuses on one-off prototypes ; a 30mm travel cyclocross fork, arguably the first enduro worthy long(ish) travel lightweight fork and the appearance of the control valve in rear damper technology. The indy CX fork with machined brake bosses was my first attempt at a true cross racing suspension fork. I don’t think this fork was an official RockShox R&D project, mor...e just something I made ‘cause I wanted to feel how it would ride. The brake bosses were machined to position v-brakes perfectly for a 700c wheel. Another 8mm or so machined from the bottom of the crown, add some 30mm ruby fork internal bits, and voila cross fork from hell. I rode and raced the cr@p out of this fork for better part of 2 winters. Refer to Image indy cx proto (photo #1) and (photo #2) Ultimately, the sales team decided the better route would be to make an affordable city bike fork instead hence the gloss black Ruby Metro. V-brake and nexus hub brake compatible. Refer to Image ruby metro (photo #3) Now that enduro is trending so hard we thought we’d trend it harder: Note the similarities between the specialized futureshock fork w/ double clamps and this very early SID 100mm prototype. Machined out upper and lower crown check. Long(ish) travel with lightweight enduro double clamps check. Refer to Image sid 100 / spec futureshock (photo #4 and 5) Progressive suspension came out of the gates around 2000? with damn fine rear dampers. These dampers were based on the work of a suspension designer named Curnutt and later developed by a world class in-house team at progressive suspension. The claim to fame for these progressive dampers was the control valve which was basically a small air spring nestled next to the main piston. This air spring blows off at different compression speeds based on air pressure in the IFP chamber = widely adjustable and precise low speed compression control. Control valve, SPV, and boost valve are all the exact same technology used on 3 different brands progressive, manitou and fox shox. Progressive coil dampers won a world DH rainbow jersey a few years into the life of the brand. Why did they leave the bike industry? Refer to Image progressive gravity air and 5th element coil (photo #6 and 7) Stay tuned soon on GWKS Fbook, we are about to drop some heavy DB tech. Cane Creek INLINE dampers will be in our grubby little hands in a few short weeks get your pre-order in today if you want the new hotness enduro trended and approved hotness Sizes available: 165 x 38 mm, 184 x 44 mm, 190 x 50 mm, 200 x 50mm, 200 x 57 mm, and 216 x 63 mm this damper is designed to fit 120 mm to 150 mm rear wheel travel bikes ..... trending soon to an enduro bike near you

throwback thursday has officially been blown out - we're getting a one day jump on this ridiculous social media special day fiasco by posting the official GARAGEWORKS throwback WEDNESDAY anything older and cool with solid design plus a bit of history is worthy - we'll try to post cool bits from all different industries the images posted here are rockshox prototypes from a long time ago - ... 1) ruby road fork - this fork was the final prototype we made before the project was axed. i was lucky enough to work out of paul turners boulder colo. mountain side workshop making prototypes from his original designs. this final prototype fork was less than 2 lbs @ 30mm travel, air sprung, with a rockhard lockout. its a shame that it was never put through the paces at paris roubaix. certainly a beautiful design piece with great lines 2) rockshox sid dual air with remote resi this was a prototype rockshox dual air with rebound, compression control and some seriously trick valving these were made as possible spec for the gt i-drive team dual suspension frames around 1999 - 2000 - this frame was the first dual suspension frame to land a spot on the podium at xc senior mens world champs under roland green of canada and team GT. i don't think he rode these shocks - these were bit too heavy. 3) rockshox deluxe remote resi super ano these were coil shocks made for the team gt dh squad around 2000 - great anodized couplings and state of the art at the time these were extra prototypes made for team gt dh race bikes now that's a throwback wednesday for true bike geeks to enjoy - dr. damper over and out.
