Squats Part Two Who are the Squats? What’s the deal with these silly little fellers? The Squats are one of the original armies introduced in the first edition of Warhammer 40K, known as Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader. The army is a strange combination of the advanced technology exemplified in modern 40K by Mechanicus armies, and a distinctive American biker gang motif. The techie aesthetic is prominent in the Warlord leaders and their Retinue Honor Guard who could be equipped... with a unique type of Terminator Armor known as Exo-Armor. In fact, according to the fluff, Squats are actually responsible for the creation of Terminator Armor and traded the technology to the Imperium. Showing off the biker gang side, were, well, bikes. Engineer Guild Bikes, to be exact, which came in a variety of styles including trikes, bikes with heavy weapons toting sidecars, and even Exo-Armor bikes because Rogue Trader was a little bit insane. Somewhere between the two aesthetics are a collection of robots and vehicles. Aside from a smattering of additional basic troops, that was the entire initial Squats army. (An interesting note about vehicles in Rogue Trader; there were only two vehicle models in the game, the Rhino and the Land Raider. This is why on very very rare occasions you’ll see oddities like a Harlequin on a Land Raider. Like I said, Rogue Trader was insane.) Squats would next show up in the mass battle system Epic! where the identity of the Squats would be heavily expanded. This would unfortunately be partially responsible for their demise, but we’ll get into that in a bit. In Epic the artisanship and technological prowess of the Squats was put on full display; the army now featured massive Land Trains, Floating Zeppelins, and giant artillery pieces. Squats had found a niche that worked for them, but unfortunately the models they became known for in Epic could not be reproduced in a 40K scale. This led to an identity crisis for the army when it came time to move forward with 40,000 second edition. Squats first and last set of rules would be in the 2nd edition core rulebook as a placeholder until their codex was released. Unfortunately, it never was. The rules staff simply could not figure out a way to make Squats work. The writers saw them as a bit of a joke and their lack of enthusiasm and overall direction meant the promised Squat 2nd edition codex was continuously put off in favor of other projects. This went on for so long, it became a running gag in the 40K community and by the time third edition rolled out, the Squat army did not even receive a rules update much less a codex. This marks the end of the short but illustrious career of Squats. Well sort of See more

A 40k Folly By Jordan Walraven Why am I writing this article? Well Gamescape has been hosting some Quarantine safe battle reports for Warhammer 40k 9th Edition on our Warhammer 40k Facebook group. We have been featuring different armies, trying out new scenarios, and highlighting how terrible I am at 40k (it’s also possible my opponents are very good). For those that do not know, I have been participating in 40k for over 25 years and have gathered quite a collection of miniat...ures along the way. As a fun bit of community engagement, I made a poll for what army I should play in my next quarantine game. As a quick aside most people will tell you that I’m a bit of a dunce when it comes to computers and the internet, the significance of which will be apparent in a moment. Well, I made a poll with nine different armies for the community to choose from for me to play. I might have failed, forgotten, or possibly simply neglected to make it a closed poll; but there were nine options! Low and behold, one of my very good friends decided to add an option to the poll. The army he added hasn’t had a new model since 1989. With friends like these... Now I will be honest there are very few 40k armies you could choose that I can’t scratch together a list for. And seeing as, at last count this army is currently leading the poll by around 7 votes, I seem to have been left in the unenviable position of playing a game of 9th edition with an army seven editions out of date. So, this is the first official entry in my personal saga to put together a playable Squats Army for 40k 9th Edition. Curse you all. End of part one. See more
