Update #2: Brutus is able to go home today with pain meds and antibiotics but we have him sch...eduled with Dr. Darrow in Rosamond for a follow up visit on March 11. Pit bulls are very tough but they shouldn’t have to go through long term pain. Dr. Darrow is an eastern/western veterinarian who uses other methods for healing that will help his franctured jaw. Surgery was not an option to remove the bullet or do anything to his jaw. Huge thanks to Bakersfield VCA vets who got him on his feet quickly! Update #1: The bullet fragmented in Brutus‘s sinus area and upper jaw. His jaw is fractured, he’s anemic from severe blood loss, and infection is starting to set in already. He’s on good meds and is being watched closely. Surgery is not an option yet because if they go in after the pieces, they’ll just move. At this point we’re going to see if we can work him through this, get him to eat, and on the path to healing. This is going to take some time for Brutus. Next update will be at 10pm. At the beginning of each year, we look back at the lessons we learned from the prior years and try to come up with ways to be proactive in solving some of Kern Counties problems. One thing we are lacking here is accessible and affordable training for people and their dogs. Now that we have an amazing trainer on staff, Samantha Loop of Steadfast Canine, we can do this With this T-shirt sale, we want to raise money to take on some training cases in the communities that cannot afford training otherwise. We needed $3500 and we only brought in $575 . While we working on finding grants to help with training costs, we currently have 13 dogs that have appointments at Critters Without Litters. It costs $130 per dog to be fixed, microchipped, rabies vaccinated with take home pain meds.
