The fence is down and the newly renovated Parcel One is open to the public! Special thanks to Councilmember Jeannine Pearce and her team, Long Beach Department of Parks Rec and Marine and Mayor Garcia. Thank you for letting Friends of Bixby Park and our community stakeholders be an active voice in the process!

Our hearts extend to the friends and family of Myrna Donahoe, fondly known as Mickey. Her strong affection of all breeds of dogs inspired her to dedicate her efforts to FRIENDS OF BIXBY DOG PARK. Friends of Bixby Dog Park was established with the City in 2018. Mickey was elected as President and a Board was established She was instrumental in getting the wood chips, kiosks & water fountains in both areas of the Dog Park.

Dear Friends of Bixby Park, As many of you know the park is a hot spot for drug dealing and public drug use, making it feel unsafe for everyone--including kids and seniors. The city does not have an ongoing plan to keep drug dealers away from the park, and community center staff are not equipped to confront drug dealers, nor should they be put in a dangerous position to ask a drug dealer to leave the park. We need city authority to make our park safe. Please support the dedic...ated efforts by our community residents to keep the park safe for everyone by taking a moment to fill out this survey for the City Budget. Please support FOBP's request for Park Ranger Hours at Bixby Park. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LBBudget See more

A History of Bixby Park Recreation Center Mural by Heather Green, Cultural Program Supervisor for the City of Long Beach The Bixby Park History Mural was completed and dedicated in 2005. It was designed through collaboration with neighborhood residents, and research history by the Mural and Cultural Arts Program staff and lead artist Guillermo Avalos. Guillermo, a Long Beach artist, began as a ten volunteer with MCAP while attending Wilson High School. Assisting artist ...Guillermo Avalos to paint the mural were: 6 youth artists, 4 volunteer adult assistants and 3 mural staff along with great support by Bixby Park staff. Greatly appreciated in making this a successful project were Community Mural Committee Members Doug Kurtz and Laurie MacBeth who participated in all phases of the design process. The project was sponsored by the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine, and the 2000 Parks Bond Act Safe Neighborhood Parks, Clean Water, Clean Air and Coastal Protection Bond Act of 2000. The history of Bixby Park is an amazing part of Long Beach. It has always involved community participation to develop and maintain the park. During World War II, volunteer community members maintained the park’s beautiful landscape. The many contributions of community volunteers with park staff have made Bixby Park an integral part of our City’s history. From the Municipal Band, Herbert Hoover campaigning at the park, an aviary to a cactus garden- it encapsulates a rich history. This is what the MCAP mural projects are about, bringing history and community together so that many celebrate and learn about our City’s diverse community history. See more

Empathy and compassion are crucial for our community during coronavirus and social unrest. Bixby Park has always been a safe haven for many. Some park visitors have recently expressed public safety concern about transient groups not observing social distance and not wearing masks during Farmer's Market, where dozens of park visitors purchase food and help sustain our local economy. What's more, residents near the park have expressed their concern to local enforcement about ho...meless encampments at the historic bandshell after park hours. The park closes nightly at 10 a.m. This code should be enforced by LBPD otherwise what's the point of having park hours? Our motto has always been "See something, say something." Please reach out to Multi-Service Center at 562-570-4500 and request assistance in providing housing information and PPE (masks) to our homeless community at the park. Please contact LBPD non-emergency at 562-435-6711 to express any concerns you have regarding public safety during COVID-19 or to report overnight camping and encampments at the park. Thank you for your support. Jeannine Pearce Suzie Price Yours in service, Friends of Bixby Park

FOBP is pleased to provide this update to local residents and park users: Phase 2 Construction will be starting next week or Monday 6/8/20 at the latest. Phase 2 Construction includes the concrete pathway, center courtyard and water fountain feature for Bixby Park. Pathways include lighting bollards and the center circular courtyard around the fountain includes a new raised planter. The Phase 2 work will also incorporate two new hydration stations for the adjacent dog park. Phase 2 is scheduled for 10-weeks of construction with a proposed finish of mid-August 2020, pending any unforeseen conditions. We will also need a plant establishment period, that is overseen by the Parks department, this is the final determination for removing construction fences and reopening the area to the public.
