Oh man! The coolest gig to hit the shop in a long time. Sunday, July 24th at 3:00pm. A tribute to the music of Ornette Coleman, featuring some of the best players in town. Outside jazz and free refreshments. All ages. Names to be announced shortly.

Just a rant here - why is there pitifully poor representation of great jazz (read the kind of jazz I like :) ) on various forms of radio? Start with KFSR , and I am an alumni of that station, and tried to make things right with my program "Conference of the Birds," but really, heaven forbid hearing anything that's not safe. Satellite radio is no better, Sirius/XM's "Real Jazz" wouldn't get caught dead playing the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Sun Ra, Cecil Taylor, Muhal Richard Ab...rams, David Murray, Carla Bley, Anthony Braxton, and hundreds of other great jazz men and women who make up the cadre of what free jazz continues to do: evolve. Tune In on smart tv has scores of jazz stations from around the world, yet the avant garde is barely noted. And who says you can't follow a Sonny Rollins tune with an Oliver Lake song? When's the last time you heard post 1962 Coltrane or Bitches Brew era Miles on the air? I'm not offering a solution, just speaking my mind... See more

Javon tickled the ivories for about half an hour before the shop opened and then thanked ME for letting him play the 1906 Bush and Lane. Uh, Javon, you've got it all wrong, it's me that should be thanking you!

Ok, I thought it would be a good idea to have a monthly get together at the shop - pretty informal, but I think it could go in lots of directions - live performances, discussion, spinning records, etc. There are some people I haven't invited yet (looking for contact info) but welcome anyone's suggestions too. Communication can be done here, although I'm accessible at the shop most days (478-4034) Let me know your thoughts... Bob
