A Living Fossil California is home to two spectacular types of redwood trees the towering Coast Redwoods that hug the coast from Humboldt to Big Sur and the ...massive Giant Sequoias of the Sierra Nevada. But did you know there’s a third, extremely rare redwood species? And, you can find it growing right here at Ardenwood! Look for the lovely Dawn Redwood (and it’s smaller offspring) near the kitchen garden behind the Patterson farmhouse. Thought to have been extinct for 5 million years, the Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostrobiodes) was discovered by Chinese scientists in a remote area of Szechuan province in the 1940s. Botanists from Harvard University collected seeds in 1948 and distributed them to botanic gardens throughout the world. Ardenwood’s Dawn Redwood was planted soon after, most likely by Dr. John Adams, husband of Sally Patterson, a granddaughter of the farm’s founder George Patterson. Around 100 million years ago, this deciduous conifer grew widely across North America, Europe and Asia. They disappeared as the climate became colder and drier in these regions. Now only a few isolated groves of Dawn Redwoods remain in southeastern China, where the mild winters and wet summers provide the growing conditions they require. Classified as critically endangered in the wild, the Dawn Redwood is now safe from extinction as it has become a popular landscape tree in many parts of the world. See more

On the last day of Women's History Month, we tip our hat once again to the Patterson matriarch Clara on another major accomplishment she had in her life. That of being a world traveler. Very few people of that time - the turn of the last century - had the means and the opportunity to visit many regions of the globe. After her sons were able to take over the very successful farming business, Clara saw many lands. She saw the Holy Land in 1900 as part of her honeymoon with her... second husband, the Rev. Layson. Their traveling days together were short-lived and she was widowed once again but that did not quell her adventurous spirit. Once the travel bug "bit", she was hooked on learning about new places. Truly lifelong learning. She was accompanied by friends and family in future expeditions. One story that really shows the interesting kind of person she was had to do with her trip to Japan. She not only saw the sights but also visited the family of some of her farm staff who had immigrated to the United States from that country. Their relationship was not the typical impersonal employer/employee kind, this was a more personal connection.
