CHPC visited Shower Plus Ministry last week to drop off donations from our congregation. We heard from Tom Windhausen, the director, about how the ministry is ...adapting to serving the homeless during the pandemic. If you'd like to help out, Shower Plus Ministry is asking for in-between meal foods such as granola bars, beef jerky, nuts, cheeze-its, and pop-top cans of ready to eat soups, chili, veggies and fruit. They also need toiletries and gently used clothing, especially men's jeans. Contact Mary Byrne or Sharon Busch to arrange drop-off or pick-up of supplies, or make a donation to "Mission Projects" and we'll do the shopping for you. Thank you CHPC for continuing to provide donations that shine Christ's love in our community. See more

To the people of First Presbyterian Church of Garden Grove: As you know, our community, state, and nation are deeply and rightly concerned about the Coronavirus. Our church family joins in those concerns and seeks to make wise decisions in caring for its members. Our governor has asked for the suspension of group gatherings, especially larger ones. The Center for Disease Control has given an extra warning for people over the age of 60 defining them as individuals at higher... risk. And our love for the members of our congregation calls us to be wise and caring. Therefore, the leadership of our church has decided to suspend our Sunday morning worship services for the rest of the month of March. But know that suspending some worship gatherings does not suspend us from being the church. We will continue to care for each other and pray for one another. And we encourage you to call the Pastor or the church office for pastoral care or any other church related needs. We also encourage each of our members to serve one another by reaching out by phone, email, or text to one another. Let’s stay in close touch with each other, as a family of faith should, and in doing so make sure everyone has what they need during these days. We will keep you in our prayers and keep you informed as to the church schedule. In Christ’s love and peace, Pastor Jack and the Elders and Deacons of First Presbyterian Church of Garden Grove

PEACE Second Sunday of Advent In John 8:12 Jesus said, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. During Advent we light candles to remember Jesus as the light of the world and of our lives. ... Last Sunday, we lit the first candle of Advent, the candle of HOPE. Each week we will light one of our Advent candles as we prepare our hearts to celebrate the birthday of Jesus. Today we light the second candle of Advent, the candle of PEACE. (Light the second candle closest to the congregation.) In Luke 1:30 we read of the PEACE given to Mary when the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. Isaiah 9:6 declares, For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. In Jesus, we too are given God’s gift of PEACE. Thanks be to God.

1st Sunday of Advent. On the 1st Sunday of Advent we lite the candle of HOPE. This is a very special time of year for us, as Christians. Each week we will light one of our Advent candles as we prepare our hearts to celebrate the birthday of Jesus. On this first Sunday of Advent, we light the candle of HOPE. Micah 5:2 says, But you, O Bethlehem, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me, one who will be ruler over Israel.... Long ago, the people of Israel had HOPE in their hearts as they waited for the Messiah, God’s chosen one, the one who would set them free. The one they were waiting for was Jesus! From Hebrews 11:1 we read, Now faith is being sure of what we HOPE for and certain of what we do not see. Today, we have HOPE in God’s promise that through Christ He will establish His kingdom in which we will live forever. And, we are told in Romans 15:13, May the God of HOPE fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him.
