Gertrude Rainey, or Ma Rainey as she’s better known, is the mother of blues that you’ve never heard of. She was born in 1886 in Columbus, Georgia, as the second of five children. Performing since she was 12 years old, she chose the stage name Ma Rainey after she married William Pa Rainey. In October 2020, one of Jacob Lawrence's long-lost paintings was discovered after spending 60 years hanging in a New York City apartment. Jacob Lawrence (Sept. 7, 1917 June 9, 2000) is an American painter known for his stirring portrayals of African-American historical subjects and contemporary life.
