This is a common sign during periods of rapid growth. With this 13 year old athlete here, we are working on treating his heel pain. As the bones grow, there is a lag with the soft tissues lengthening and there are different stresses to the ligaments and tendons of the body. The biggest misconception with growing pains is that they will just go away on their own. International Women's Day is this Sunday, March 8th. To elevate and celebrate, we will be featuring some truly amazing women this week on our social media. Read... on to get to know Dr. Melissa Woo, PT, DPT: 1. What do you see when you look at yourself? Be honest. When I look at myself, I see a mom of 3, a wife, a physical therapist; but those are just roles that I have. When I look deeper, I see a woman who has overcome many obstacles, who has come out stronger and more resilient. I see a woman who cares deeply for family and friends, who has a passion and purpose for helping people live their best lives through physical therapy, exercise, and prenatal and postnatal training. 2. Ask a friend to tell you what they see when they look at you. In their own words: The embodiment of courage and compassion. I see a beautiful, hard working mom who always does the best for her family and is always there for me when I need her. 3. Reflect on the women that have helped create equality for you, who are they, what did they do? My mom has always been a good example of someone who helped create equality for me. She set a great example to me growing up by starting her own business, and successfully running it for 30+ years. 4. Who are you when you're stressed? When I’m stressed, I immediately feel overwhelmed and probably will cry, but I try to have a quick turnaround time to get into Get sh** done mode because I know that stress can come frequently and your character is determined by how you respond to stressful events. 5. Who are you when you're in your power? When I’m in my power, I am a general bada** who can do anything I put my mind to. (I wish this was all the time!) 6. Who are you as a woman who puts in the extra sweat (a short bio focusing on empowerment, inspiration and collaboration)? When I put in the extra sweat I am a doctor of physical therapy, a movement expert focused on helping people live their best life by getting out of pain, back to exercise, so they can live a strong and active life. I love working with women in the prenatal and postpartum period. Most women get very little guidance during this time regarding exercise, what is safe, and what is healthy. My purpose is to empower these women, to guide them through this challenging and sometimes confusing journey. I educate them on safe ways to stay in the gym, and continue getting stronger and more active to reap the health benefits for themselves and their baby. My role when collaborating with a new mom is to be a quarterback for her health, listening to and addressing her health concerns as a post partum female, and a mom to a new baby.
