SPIRITUAL VITAMIN THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER Week of April 18-24, 2021 Rev. Dr. Harold E. Kidd, Pastor-Teacher... It’s All about God’s Timing OT: Psalm 4 NT: 1 John 3:1-7 Waiting on God to act in our behalf can seem like forever. Yet the author John in his first letter reminds believers in chapter 3:17, that with the Lord, one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. He also reminds us that God is not slack concerning His promises, as some count slackness. In the midst of our needs, First John encourages us to wait patiently, abiding with each other, even when we are disturbed at what is happening in our lives and world, or are struggling to recognize Christ’s resolution to the problems that assail us. SPIRITUAL VITAMIN SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER Week of April 11 17, 2021 Rev. Dr. Harold E. Kidd, Pastor-Teacher... This Is the Victory OT: Psalm 133 NT: 1 John 5:1-13 The letter of First John was written by the Disciple John late in the first century to dispel doubts and to build assurance to believers under heavy persecution that their faith in Jesus Christ was not in vain. Fear is a terrible reality that can paralyze our faith, thereby quenching hope as well as weakening our strength and will to press on against all opposition. David knew this reality when he penned out of his own experiences Psalm 27, The Lord is the strength of our lives, of whom, or what shall we be afraid? As an eyewitness of Jesus, seen, heard, and touched by Jesus, John reassures believers of all time in this short letter that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. It is our faith in Him that overcomes the world with all its pressures and trials. SPIRITUAL VITAMIN RESURRECTION OF THE LORD/EASTER Week of April 4 10, 2021 Rev. Dr. Harold E. Kidd, Pastor-Teacher... Come See What God Has Done! OT: Isaiah 64:1-8 NT: Matthew 28:1-10 The Resurrection of Jesus is a continual reminder of the reality that God performs miracles on a daily basis. At Easter God called forth a radically new life, overturning the power of death, and proclaiming the triumph of love. These first disciple’s sorrow and mourning was transformed into joy. Easter is the in-breaking of God’s affirmation that love is stronger than death, and that life will triumph over the powers of evil and hate. There is a mystery in Easter. No one saw the moment of the resurrection of Jesus from death and the grave, yet they experienced the results of that moment. The same is true for us. We trust that God alone can transform the moments of our despair and grief into a life of purpose and victory. SPIRITUAL VITAMIN PALM SUNDAY/PASSION WEEK Week of March 28 April 3, 2021 Rev. Dr. Harold E. Kidd, Pastor-Teacher... Just for Me OT: Isaiah 50:4-9 NT: Mark 14:13-28 Palm Sunday and Passion Week is a liturgically full week that allows us to consider all our Lord Jesus endured in order to save us from eternal separation from God. Palm Sunday leading into the Lord’s week of passion contains the heights and depths of the human experience that captures the drama and emotion we encounter during the lifetime of our lives. Seasons of exuberant joy, high hopes, as well as seasons of deep anguish of soul and spirit. Our journey with Jesus during Passion Week allows us to reflect upon what it means to share in the fellowship of his sufferings. Yet, the conclusion of Passion Week points us to the cross where Jesus died, just for us! SPIRITUAL VITAMIN Fifth Sunday in Lent Week of March 21-27, 2021 Rev. Dr. Harold E. Kidd, Pastor-Teacher... Let Go And Let God OT: Psalm 51:1-12 NT: John 12:20-33 There is a discipline in letting go, to releasing what is known and safe in exchange for that, which breaks us open to new life and possibilities. Whether we like it or not, we practice this life principle with varying degrees of success and failure, all the time. John 12:20-33 begins with people’s universal need to see faithfulness in human form. As Jesus enters into Jerusalem over palms strewn under his feet, a few Greeks approach the disciples saying, Sir we want to see Jesus. How many times have we expressed the same sentiment? We want to see an end to poverty. We want to see an end to injustices and corruption that result in many forms of human suffering and misery. We want to see Jesus. But even in our need to see Jesus active and present with us, we need to let go of our preconceived notions and expectations of just where we think he should show up and how he will act. SPIRITUAL VITAMIN 4th Sunday after Epiphany Week of January 31-February 6, 2021 Rev. Dr. Harold E. Kidd, Pastor-Teacher... Is It Worth It? Isaiah 40:28-31 Philippians 3:17-21 Waiting for change in our life circumstances can be like running a marathon race. Seeking reconciliation with a friend or family member, can seem like a dream deferred. Treatments designed to heal or prolong our lives from diseases like cancer or diabetes, lupus or kidney failure can often create emotional fatigue. Working for justice and equality on societal issues such as housing, immigration, legislation impacting health care and poverty, can appear to offer minimal changes for the better. And we do ask ourselves at times is it all worth it? Is everything that we have continually prayed about, or going through and invested our energies in, worth it? Though his life was filled with many long-term physical ailments as well as troubles, Paul gives his response in the final verses of Philippians chapter 3. SPIRITUAL VITAMIN 3rd Sunday after Epiphany Week of January 24-30, 2021 Rev. Dr. Harold E. Kidd, Pastor-Teacher... Reach For The Prize! Isaiah 43:15-19 Philippians 3:12-16 There will always be opposition to our personal growth and development in Christ as well as opposition to this world becoming a better place. The Apostle Paul understood this reality quite well. In fact, the oppositions he faced in life developed him into the person and servant of Christ that he became. We cannot rise to be our very best without opposition. We cannot rise to become the nation God knows we have the potential to become without opposition. All of the advancements we have made nationally came against the winds of opposition. There is no birth without some form of labor pains. The birthing of a vision or a dream usually come in the midst of opposition. SPIRITUAL VITAMIN Celebrating the Birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 2nd Sunday after Epiphany Week of January 17-23, 2021... Rev. Dr. Harold E. Kidd, Pastor-Teacher Press On! 1 Kings 19:1-12, 15-18 Philippians 3:12-13 Paul did not have it all figured out when it came to the immediate future of his life nor the world in which he lived. He had faith to believe that ultimately Christ would return, the kingdom of God would come, and reign victoriously. His present future, God’s plans, and God’s intentions for his life and world were to be a lived experience, one day at a time. Paul’s goal was to press on! Forgetting the successes and failures of the past and to press on into God’s future for his life and world. In the days and times in which we live, what can we learn from Paul’s attitude concerning facing the unknown future as we move deeper into 2021? SPIRITUAL VITAMIN Baptism of the Lord Sunday Week of January 10 16, 2021 Rev. Dr. Harold E. Kidd, Pastor-Teacher... A Strategy For Success In Trouble Times Joshua 1:1 9 Philippians 3:9 11 Success by world and cultural standards focuses on our achievements and our accumulation of possessions. God’s strategy for success however, is totally different. Success as revealed to Joshua and the Apostle Paul was based upon a personal relationship with God. With so much uncertainty of how 2021 will unfold related to the lingering effects of the Pandemic on our national life, personal life and economy, a personal question for each of us to answer would be: By what standards do we measure how successful we have become in life? SPIRITUAL VITAMIN 19th Sunday after Pentecost Week of October 11 17, 2020 Rev. Dr. Harold E. Kidd, Pastor... Good Trouble Psalm 119:64-71 Romans 13:1-7 The November 3rd elections will be critical in determining the future direction of this nation domestic and foreign policies for decades to come. Even while there are many who do not vote for a variety of reasons, voting is not an option. Voting is a civic responsibility of every voting age individual. Men and women have suffered, bled, and died for the voting rights of those who have been marginalized and ostracized. The late Rep. John Lewis was a shining example of ‘Getting into good trouble, necessary trouble.’ Let’s examine how the Apostle Paul addresses the issue of the Christian and their civic responsibilities found in Romans 13. SPIRITUAL VITAMIN World Communion Sunday 18th Sunday after Pentecost Week of October 4 10, 2020... Rev. Dr. Harold E. Kidd, Pastor Is This New Wine? Isaiah 43:1019 Mark 2:1822 Today we celebrate World Wide Communion Sunday. On this day churches around the world come to the Table of the Lord as an expression our oneness in Jesus Christ. But there’s something distinctively different in our observance of Holy Communion this day as it has been for several months. We will gather as the digital church. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us just how vital technology in the church can be. Has our need to be the church digitally, created new ways and opportunities through which the church can witness for Christ? Is the digital church here to stay? SPIRITUAL VITAMIN Celebrating Evangelism Sunday 17th Sunday after Pentecost Week of September 27 October 3, 2020... Rev. Dr. Harold E. Kidd, Pastor Who Gave You This Authority? Psalm 25:1-11 Matthew 21:23-32 In Jesus’ world, as in ours, people looked for the outward signs of authority education, title, position, connections, wealth. But Jesus’s authority came from who he was, not from any outward and superficial trappings. As followers of Christ, God has given us authority we can confidently speak and act on our Lord’s behalf because he has authorized and commissioned us to do so. In a culture that promotes there is no final authority, believers are called to stand on the authority give to the Church by Christ. We are called to bear witness to God’s truth, which many times is contrary to and unpopular with common culture and values. SPIRITUAL VITAMIN 16th Sunday after Pentecost Week of September 20 26, 2020 Rev. Dr. Harold E. Kidd, Pastor "An All-Consuming Grace"... Jonah 3:104:11 Matthew 20:116 Will it be grace or justice? As we look at our Christian faith, shouldn’t this be grace and justice? In much of the bible, both of these twin themes are fixed as attributes of God. God is the very embodiment of both grace and justice. In the book of Jonah, we remember that the Ninevites were the sworn enemies of Jonah and the Israelites. Jonah’s hatred was so great towards them, that he could not forgive them. Jonah is the one that has to bring God’s message that saves his enemies. And because they repented, God saves them rather than destroying them as Jonah had hoped. Jonah’s hatred is so great, he wishes to die rather than see the Ninevites saved. However, God’s grace triumphs over all human self-righteousness and forms of justice. SPIRITUAL VITAMIN 15th Sunday after Pentecost Week of September 13 19, 2020 Celebrating Christian Education Week... Rev. Dr. Harold E. Kidd, Pastor "Cost of Forgiveness" Psalm 103:1-13 Matthew 18:21-35 In Jesus’ parable of the Unforgiving Servant, he is reminding the disciples on the importance of compassion and forgiveness. The amount the servant owed the king was a vast fortune, more than an average person could make in a lifetime. In an extraordinary act of compassion, the loan was forgiven by the king. However, there was a price, and the price was to be transformed by being forgiven, and to spread this compassion to others. Tragically, the forgiveness offered by the king to his servant did not lead to his transformation. When we ponder God’s offer of forgiveness in our lives, how has it transformed us? SPIRITUAL VITAMIN Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost Week of September 612, 2020 Rev. Dr. Harold E. Kidd, Pastor... "Principles of Our Faith" Exodus 12:1-14 Romans 13:8-14 Paul’s letter to the believers in Rome has been considered a summary of the core teachings of Christian doctrine. Paul himself doesn’t have an answer for every issue related to being a Christian. What he offers in Romans are guiding principles to help believers live in faithfulness to Christ. If we lived in first century Christianity, we would encounter groups of imperfect people who hurt one another, people who were trying to resolve conflict in healthy ways, and people who needed to be held accountable. We would encounter people who are more like us than we think. It is an excellent reminder that those who wrote the New Testament and those who starred in the New Testament did not have it all worked out, they were simply struggling together to figure out what it meant to follow Jesus. SPIRITUAL VITAMIN Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost Week of August 30 September 5, 2020 Rev. Dr. Charles Marks... "Divine Empathy" Exodus 3:1-10 Romans 12:9-13 Exodus 3 is full of drama. It introduces us to Moses and later to an Angel who appears in a flaming bush. But while the bush is in flames it doesn't burn. God uses the "burning bush" to get Moses attention to announce His displeasure at the suffering and misery of the enslaved Israelites. God declares His intention to deliver the people out of their oppression. This passage reflects God's empathetic heart, compassion and intention to deliver the suffering Israelites out of bondage. Moses is to be the instrument, but God is the true liberator of the oppressed. On Sunday, August 30, 2020, The Rev. Dr. Charles Marks is our Guest Preacher. Join us for Virtual Worship via Zoom, access on our website http://www.inglewoodfirstpres.org to hear this dynamic Preacher and Man of God! SPIRITUAL VITAMIN Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost Week of August 23 29, 2020 Rev. Neema Cyrus-Franklin... The Power of God’s Blessings Exodus 1:8-9, 15-20 Romans 12:1-8 Today’s scripture reading is one that illuminates two vital points for our lives. First, how the power of God’s blessings is assured and cannot be redirected, redistributed, or denied. Not even a king, the highest ranking person in the land, can repurpose what God said is for the Israelite people. Shiphrah and Puah demonstrated character, faith, and courage in the face of seemingly overwhelming odds. The lives of these two faithful women teach us the second vital point in this bible passage. When we are called to be courageous in the face of death and destruction, keeping God’s commands leads to great blessings and freedom. On Sunday, August 23, 2020, The Rev. Neema Cyrus-Franklin, Stated Clerk of the Presbytery of the Pacific (PCUSA) will be our Guest Preacher. SPIRITUAL VITAMIN Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost Week of August 1622, 2020 Rev. Dr. Harold E. Kidd, Pastor-Teacher... God Has a Plan OT: Genesis 45:1-15; 50:20 NT: Matthew 15:21-28 In Genesis Chapter 45, we have this precious story of a family being reconciled. Although Joseph’s brothers wanted to get rid of him, God used even their evil actions to fulfill his ultimate plan. He sent Joseph ahead to preserve their lives, save Egypt, and prepare the way for the beginning of the nation of Israel. Joseph was rejected, kidnapped, enslaved and imprisoned, yet it was all part of God’s divine plan. Possibly, as the years passed, Joseph became aware that God was actually using all of this trouble in his life, for a greater good, and did not allow bitterness to take hostage the gift of God’s forgiveness. Yes, we may not understand why evil seems rampant within the world today or trouble comes our way, but we must remember, evil is only a tool in the hand of God to achieve a greater purpose. What some may intend for evil, God can use it for our good. SPIRITUAL VITAMIN Tenth Sunday after Pentecost Week of August 915, 2020 Rev. Dr. Harold E. Kidd, Pastor-Teacher... Adonai The God Who Rules OT: Judges 6:116 NT: Romans 1:17 John Flavel, an English Presbyterian clergyman is quoted as having made famous the statement, Man’s extremity is God’s opportunity. Which is to say that when our help fails then God appears. Such was the case with Abraham, Moses, Hannah, Paul, and so many others named in Scripture. We are also in this cast of characters. As in the case of Gideon, our feelings of inadequacy, shortcomings and inabilities to determine our future, leaves our hearts open to turn to God who alone is able to do for us what we are powerless to do for ourselves. Surrender allows God to express, reveal, and manifest Himself fully in our lives and over every area of our life. Even while God is Adonai The Master and Ruler of all things, we can never experience the fullness of His Lordship in our lives without surrender. SPIRITUAL VITAMIN Ninth Sunday after Pentecost / Holy Communion Sunday Rev. Dr. Harold E. Kidd, Pastor-Teacher Week of August 2 8, 2020... Elohim The Strong Creator God OT: Genesis 1:1-10, 26-31 NT: John 1:1-14 Scientist, astronomers, chemists, and persons in many disciplines have debated and defended varying positions on Creation. Is Creationism and Evolution incompatible, or can they be viewed in harmony? How did the universe, our world and humanity come into existence? The Bible while being a document based upon historical facts, culture, society, and religion: from Genesis Revelation is a record of Salvation History. For the writer of Genesis, the Book of Beginnings Elohim is the ‘uncaused cause’ of all creation! SPIRITUAL VITAMIN Eighth Sunday after Pentecost Rev. Dr. Harold E. Kidd, Pastor-Teacher Week of July 26 August 1, 2020 Jehovah Tsaba The Lord Our Warrior... OT: I Samuel 17:38-47 NT: 2 Corinthians 10:1-6 The contest between David and Goliath is classic. Yet, what many may not focus on in this battle between a giant and a youth is that, David, prior to his engaging the giant Goliath called on the name of the Lord. David knew that, because God was the Lord of the army and the Creator over all, he was depending upon God’s supremacy in this situation rather than trying to handle it himself. David said he came in the name of the Lord of hosts. The name Tsaba essentially means army or host. Some giants in life are too big for us to handle by ourselves, but like David, when we recognize the battle belongs to Jehovah Tsaba, victory is assured.
