New Golfers’ Month - Part 5 Hybrids are a great addition to the bag. They have the loft of an iron with the shape of a wood to inspire more confi...dence. They typically substitute the longer irons in most sets and for good reason. More clubhead speed is needed to get the ball airborne with clubs that have lower lofts. Beginners typically have a swing speed of 50-70mph with the longest clubs so don’t be surprised if you hit hybrids better than a 4 or 5 iron. That’s the reason they were designed. For hybrids, Budget would be under $60, Mid-Range would be $60 to $180 and over $180 would be Premium by today’s pricing. However, you can find great deals anywhere on hybrids from used to new since the supply is so great. A word on shafts: they primarily determine how high and how often you’ll get the ball airborne so choose wisely. I have seen 40 grams on the low end and 100 grams on the high end for graphite shaft hybrids. It will be a number on the side of the shaft (shown here).
