Thank you SLV Rotary for helping keep the Felton Discovery Park beautiful! This unique park was designed to promote environmental literacy through hands-on education. To date, FLF, in partnership with Santa Cruz County Parks Department has hosted several work days to help with removal of invasive species. Being surrounded by beautiful and beneficial native plants is an education in itself. As we wait for Covid restrictions to subside, small groups have continued to voluntee...r their time. Plans for regularly scheduled work days in 2021 are underway. If you have a group or organization who would like more information on volunteering email [email protected]. Felton Discovery Park Plant of the Month - Toyon, California Holly, or Christmas berry (Heteromeles arbutifolia) If you have been out walking in oak or mixed evergreen woodlands this fall, you may have noticed this multi-stemmed evergreen shrub with a resplendent display of red berries and dark green leathery leaves. Although it could be mistaken for Pyracantha, or even English Holly, Toyon is our native California version of Christmas berry. In the Felton Discovery Park, Toy...on shrubs have just recently been planted near the sundial. We look forward to many years of their bright berries and summer blooms. Meet Melinda Pasquinucci, Library Assistant. Melinda has worked as an aide for the Santa Cruz Public Libraries system since 2009, and loves her work and her co-workers! She was born in La Jolla and grew up in Los Altos Hills. After graduating from West Valley College and marrying her husband Paul, Melinda took time to raise two beautiful daughters and volunteer in Boulder Creek. Melinda was ‘born to run’ and has competed in three sprint triathlons, two 1/2 marathons and nume...rous 10k runs. She has an enormous desire to ‘play outside’, hiking the scenic and majestic cliffs of Bryce Canyon, Zion, and Arches, and visiting Mayan ruins in different parts of Central America. She has hiked through the jungles of Costa Rica, and gone swimming with sharks in Belize (ok- they were just nurse sharks, but still!). She has been fortunate to travel extensively, from visiting the Vatican, the Roman Colosseum, and Pompeii to tossing coins into the Trevi Fountain. From tapas and wine in San Sebastian, Spain, to swimming in the Mediterranean. Sightseeing such wonders as the Montserrat Monastery built into the mountains, the Gaudi Cathedral and the Picasso Museum in Malaga. But her greatest accomplishment is her family; her husband of 40 years, two wonderfully grounded daughters, and two adorable grandchildren - life has been a blessing for her! #feltonlibrary #feltonlibraryfriends #librarynews #downtownfelton

Library update: The Grab and Go service for picking up holds will remain available during the new COVID restrictions, with access limited to two patrons at a time in expanded lobby space. More space = increased safety, plus people actually get to take in the beauty of the branch a little, at least. However, computer use in the Community Room has been suspended for now. All libraries will be closed from December 24-January 2. Santa Cruz Public Libraries' new mobile app makes... it easy to search the library catalog, check out your holds, and more. Look for the "Santa Cruz Public Libraries" in the app stores. You ca also find details and download the mobile app here: https://www.santacruzpl.org/services/detail/43/ #feltonlibrary #feltonlibraryfriends #downtownfelton

In the virtual world, Felton and Aptos are not far apart, so our Friends groups are entering into a collaboration. Since 2018, Friends of the Aptos Library, a fellow chapter of FSCPL, has offered Our Community Reads, creating a shared experience through events centered around a selected book. In February, Felton Library volunteer April Zilber will lead a Zoom book discussion group as part of a series of free virtual events highlighting this year’s selection, The Great Beli...evers, and themes in the book. Felton Library Staff Profile: Meet Lauren Wysham, Library Assistant II Lauren was born in Fayetteville, NC, and lived in Paradise California from early childhood until graduating high school, when she moved to Chico. A few years later she spent a summer living in Mendocino, and then a year in Arcata. She finally settled in Santa Cruz in 2005. After moving to Santa Cruz Lauren, Lauren worked as a Library Aide and graduated UCSC in 2010 with a degree in Anthropology with a con...centration in Archaeology. She was then hired to work for Albion Environmental, a local archaeological firm. Though Lauren has a deep love for archaeology and history, she missed working for the Santa Cruz Public Libraries. She found that being around books, and people who love books, is her true passion, and decided to return to the library. She currently divides her work duties between Marketing and Programs and the Felton Branch. Her goal is to obtain a master’s degree in Library Science. A year ago she moved to Ben Lomond and has found her forever home in the Santa Cruz Mountains with her husband Dominic and their two black cats. #felton #feltonlibraryfriends #feltonlibraryfriends
