All of those many pleasant hours in the garden are paying off! Spring has sprung in a BIG way.
Well, what a way to start the first day of SPRING! I was greeted by a new addition to our bunny family. There is only one that has come up from underground (and perhaps the only one) but I'm in LOVE! Now to find the perfect name. I'm thinking LILAC!
Another super cool reuse of an unwanted item....WILLOW BENCHES! We had a willow taken down and they left all of the huge stumps. Took off the bark and sanded the tops - fun seating for a night around the fire pit.
RECYCLE! A neighbor no longer was using his horse feeder so I took it off his hands. Turned it into a planter with beans growing up the middle, swiss chard in the bed surrounded by calendula. It will be GORGEOUS and tasty. After he found out what I was going to do with it he wanted it back! I told him I'd be sure to supply his family with beans and chard all summer long!
Have LEMONS? Make your own LEMONADE: 1) Heat 1 1/2 cups sugar and 1 cup water over medium/high heat until sugar dissolves (remove from heat). 2) Stir in 1 1/2 cups FRESH LEMON JUICE AND 6 cups water. 3) Refrigerate until cool and serve over ice.
Sunday Brunch = 100 PERCENT from my garden! Now that's what I'm talking about! Grapefruit will be squeezed, followed by an omelet complete with the hen's eggs, asparagus, broccoli, kale, onion, potatoes, celery, thyme, basil, oregano, two kinds of parsley, spinach and cilantro. I MIGHT add my girlfriend's homemade pepper jack = HEAVEN!!!!
FARM GIRL tip of the day: Don't be afraid to try. I went to a friends property and took a few samples from her 100 year old garden. Let's see if I can get them to prosper in mine. Might as well give it a shot.
Use STRAW BALES to create garden beds. If you add nutrients to the bales ahead of time you can PLANT IN THEM as well. Growing basil from seed in the front, cucumbers to the right, watermelon to the left and lettuce from seed in the back. I filled the middle with soil and planted two blueberry bushes!
Farm Girl is back on FB! We will still not be open to the public but almost every day I will update everyone on new ideas, creative plantings and more. Stay tuned. Thank you for being so loyal. Happy SPRING!!!!
