In 1997 David Harewood became the first Black man to play Othello at The National Theatre. Shakespeare wrote, The Tragedy of Othello, The Moor of Venice in 1603. White audiences did not think a Black man could be intelligent enough to play Othello as he was written to be by Shakespeare so he was for centuries played by white actors in Black face. So few know the name of this epic Jazz pianist who did so much for Black women in theatre & film at a time when it was not only unpopular but unheard of! Hazel Scott was black listed for being uncompromising in her desire for dignified roles for Black women. She was cast in a film as a pianist where all the Black wives of soldiers wore dirty aprons. For three days she refused to film until all their aprons were changed to floral dresses. Thank you for all the sacrifices you made that give us joy in nostalgia.
