Independent Order of the Oddfellows Euclid Lodge 68 15.11.2020

The Fraternity of Odd Fellows is considered one of the oldest and largest fraternity (also known as a fraternal and service organization and a friendly society) in the world. Its roots can be traced back to trade guilds in England in the year 1700s or older. It is also the first fraternity to accept both men and women when it formed that Rebekah degree in 1851. Though the term sorority was not yet coined in that year, the Rebekah may be considered the first and oldest sororit...y in the world. It aims to improve and elevate the character of humankind, to aid the community and the world and make it a better place to live, to aid the less fortunate by donating to charities, to support the youth of our community and help them grow, to aid our own members in times of distress, to support science and research foundations for the elimination of diseases and poverty and to support our community in every way possible. Its motto is friendship, love, and truth. It continues to exist in the United States, Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Australia, New Zealand, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Norway, Poland, Puerto Rico, Philippines, Sweden, and Switzerland with over 600,000 members making it one of the oldest and largest fraternity in the world. Moreover, Odd Fellowship, unlike many other organizations, makes no special effort to attract "name" members. Odd Fellows is a warm, personal type of affiliation that doesn't rely on "rubbing elbows" with the famous to give them satisfaction. Examples of famous members who belong to the royal family are: King George IV of United Kingdom Levi and Matilda Stanley, King and Queen of the Gypsies In America, there were some hundreds who were members of the Odd Fellows Fraternity. Some of these great men were: Schuyler Colfax, U.S. Vice President in 1869 to 1873 Ulysses S. Grant, 18th U.S. President Rutherford Hayes, 19th U.S. President Thomas Hendricks, 21st U.S. Vice President William McKinley, 25th U.S. President Warren Harding, 29th U.S. President (19211923) Franklin Roosevelt, 32nd U.S. President Anson Jones, the last President of the Republic of Texas William Jennings Bryan, U.S. Secretary of State (1913-1915) Earl Warren, U.S. Chief Justice (1953-1969) Goodwin Knight, 31st Governor of California In the field of architecture: Nathan Kelley, the architect who designed the Ohio statehouse William Marsh Rice, Founder of Rice University Iconic figures: Wyatt Earp, a legendary figure of the Wild West Charlie Chaplin, famous actor and comedian Many members of the Rebekah also became famous leaders and pioneers in many fields, one example is: Lucy Hobbs Taylor, first female dentist in the United States Philippine website: www.ioofphilippines.yolasite.com [email protected] Sovereign Grand Lodge: www.ioof.org [email protected]

History of the Odd Fellows In 17th Century England people were facing a lot of challenges. Life was tough, often lawless and desperate. Medicine was still crude and in a primitive stage. Life expectancy was about 45 to 50. There were lots of sickness, orphaned kids, widowed mothers, and many people could not afford to pay for a decent burial for the dead. So ordinary people from different trades and walks of life found it necessary to group together as brothers and sisters ...and contribute some of their hard-earned wages to a common fund which they could use for unfortunate times such as sickness, losing a job and even death. They would work together to help each other and the unfortunate families back on their feet, whether it was rebuilding a barn that had burned or putting in a new crop after a devastating season. Such altruistic and friendly society came to be known as Odd Fellows because it was odd to find people organized for the purpose of giving aid to those in need and of pursuing projects for the benefit of all mankind. It was believed and often said, They were an odd bunch of fellows who would behave in such a selfless and seemingly impractical fashion. Odd Fellows are also known as The Three Links Fraternity which stands for Friendship, Love, and Truth The Independent Order of Odd Fellows was founded on the North American Continent in Baltimore, Maryland, on April 26, 1819, when Thomas Wildey and four members of the order from England instituted Washington Lodge No.1. This lodge received its charter from Manchester Unity of Odd Fellows in England. At that time, the city was suffering both a yellow fever epidemic and mass unemployment so they dedicated the organization to visit the sick, relieve the distress, bury the dead, and educate the orphans. Odd Fellowship became the 1st national fraternity to include both men and women when it adopted the Rebekah degree on September 20, 1851. This degree is based on teachings found in the Holy Bible and was written by the Honorable Schuyler Colfax who was Vice President of the United States under Ulysses S. Grant. Odd Fellows were also the first group to form homes for their aged members and the first home was in Pennsylvania. Odd fellows also have lodges for boys and girls, Junior Odd Fellows and Theta Rho, as well as youth camps- including summer camps in California. The Independent Order of Odd Fellows has been active in California since September 9, 1849, one year before California Statehood and eleven years before the start of the Civil War At that time California Lodge Number 1 was established in San Francisco. There are over 300 Lodges in California today under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of California and (nationally) the Sovereign Grand Lodge located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The members of the Upland Odd Fellows, Euclid Lodge #68 had a hopping good time when they came together to assemble Easter Baskets for the children that are housed by Foothill Family Shelter. The Upland Odd Fellows stepped in to supply the baskets after the original organization that was to supply the baskets backed out at the last minute. Because of this 24 children were able to experience a Happy Easter. Foothill Family Shelter is a nonprofit organization founded in 1984 wh...ich houses homeless adults and children for a period of up to 120 days, free of rent and utility charges. They also provide one-year transitional housing as well as permanent housing. The Foothill Family Shelter began as St. Mark's Homeless Shelter and currently serves as a transitional facility for homeless adults and children from the west end of San Bernardino County and the east end of Los Angeles County.
