Things will be pretty quiet around here for the last couple of weeks of October. We are encouraging our congregation (and any who would like to join us) to fast from social media and news media and to use the saved time in our days to pray for our church, nation, and world - especially for the anxious, polarized, mistrusting nature of our current national context.

Yesterday we had the wonderful opportunity to welcome a portion of our congregation back into the worship space for the first time since March 8! This was a beta group from among our staff, vestry, lay leaders, medical, and educational professionals. We’ve receive some valuable feedback and are looking forward to being able to have more of you in-person for worship in the near future. Be on the lookout for how to register to attend in-person this Sunday in the newsletter later in the week. Of course, we will continue to broadcast the service over Zoom as we have been for those unable to attend in-person.

Today was a big day for Eucharist Church. While one group of 10 people were at our first Journey of Generosity mini-retreat up in Placer County, and another group was meeting for our third Off the Zoom event in Golden Gate Park, yet another was meeting at the worship space, preparing for our first in-person worship service since March 8! Thank you so much to the dedicated group of staff and volunteers who serviced our community in this way.

Now that you belong to Jesus you have a new citizenship. You no longer belong to Rome, you no longer belong to Greece or any other past or future empire, all your other local loyalties or politics get relegated under this new citizenship...All our political loyalties and presidential hopes must be relegated under our common citizenship in the Kingdom. From Singular Citizens by Fr. Jon Yeager. This and many other sermons from our archive are available on our website, and from Apple Podcasts.

You may have read in our newsletter this week that we are making plans to welcome you back for in-person worship in a few weeks. The staff has been very busy preparing for this, in order to make it the warmest, safest, most accessible gathering we can. We will continue to broadcast over Zoom, and the online broadcast will remain the unifying element, bridging the gap between those at home and those in the room. This is why we’ve purchased and installed multiple monitors aroun...d the room, so that what you see at home is exactly the same as what those in-person see on the screen. Also, once we start meeting in person, we will be sharing in Holy Communion weekly, and the sacrament will still be made available to those who are unable to attend in person (whether due to size restrictions or safety concerns). We’re really looking forward to being back together. We won’t all be able to attend every week for some time, but until then, we’re working to make it the best experience possible for everyone. Once again (and still), our land is on fire. We pray for those who continue to suffer in Southern California and especially for our neighbors in Santa Rosa and Napa who are evacuating and fighting new fires. Lord, be with the firefighters and first responders who are assisting and endeavoring to protect both persons and property. Almighty God, by your Word you laid the foundations of the earth, set the bounds of the sea, and still the wind and waves. Surround us with your grace and peace, and preserve us through these fires. By your Spirit, lift up those who have fallen, strengthen those who work to rescue or rebuild, and fill us with the hope of your new creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Humility is at the heart of our redemption in Christ, so as we consider His Humility, I want us also to consider this question, What would be the effect if all of us were guided by the humility of Jesus? What if at the heart of our relationships we embodied the humility of Christ?... From Christian Unity Comes Through Humility by Sean Thomas. Why did you move to the Bay Area? What has kept you here? What factors play into whether you stay in the future? What role does a church community play in that decision? // Be sure to check out our podcast episode from this week entitled Doubling Down: Casting a Vision For the Future of Eucharist Church.

We had our second Off The Zoom event this last Saturday, and got to share a gorgeous day at Crown Memorial Beach I#in Alameda. Thanks to everyone who joined us. It was so good to see you (even if we were still 6+ feet away...)! Be sure to look out for the details for our next meet-up.

To receive mercy, we must extend mercy. Just like in breathing we must exhale in order to inhale. According to Jesus, you cannot be a forgiven and, simultaneously, unforgiving person. Biblically speaking, this is an impossibility. And whenever we pray the Lord’s prayer we reinforce this truth as we are repeatedly asking that our own forgiveness from God be tied to our willingness to forgive others. From Anger-Induced Amnesia by Fr. Ryan Jones. This and many other sermons from our archive are available on our website, and from Apple Podcasts.

We haven’t had a News & Events post since February 11th! If anyone was wondering how long it takes for a community to adjust to a new normal, this could be a case study. That being said, we have some exciting things to share with you today - First up, TONIGHT at 8PM we will be hosting our second Meta Conversation on Modern Society via Zoom. Father Ryan will be leading us in a discussion which seeks to disentangle the American Project from the Church’s iden...tity and ends. This is a very important conversation for the life of our church and our roles as American Citizens. Next, (AQI permitting) we will be having our second Off the Zoom gathering on Saturday, September 19th, this time at Crown Memorial Beach Park from 1:00-4:00 PM. Remember, these gatherings are socially distanced BYO picnics. We encourage you to bring / wear masks as required by local health and safety mandates. Next, we are incredibly excited to announce that we will be celebrating our first baptism of 2020. Aidan Christopher Jones will be baptized as part of our worship service on September 20. On Saturday, September 26th John Trammell will be ordained as a Deacon in God’s Holy Church. The service will be at 2:30 pm, and will be broadcast over Zoom. The link may be found on the calendar at our website. Please plan to join us. On Sunday, September 27th, we will have an All-Church Meeting immediately after worship. We will be voting on a new vestry member and discussing other important topics. Lastly, spots are filling up quickly for our October mini-retreats (spots still available for Oct. 2/3 & 16/17), during which we will go through the Journey of Generosity material. These retreats are 24 hour experiences and are free of charge. For more information and to sign up, see our web page. See more

What I’m trying to say is that the idea of taking up your cross and being a living sacrifice are two ways of saying the same thing. In both cases, we are to view ourselves as dead. We are no longer walking around simply trying to live out our individual hopes and dreams and ambitions. This is why St. Paul says in Galatians, I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. And it is from this standpoint from this perspective, that everything about life starts to look dif...ferent. To offer our bodies as a living sacrifice is to see the world through the lens of Jesus Christ. It is to have the mind of Christ. From Discernment by Fr. Ryan Jones. This and many other sermons from our archive are available on our website, and from Apple Podcasts. See more
