As we welcome 2021, we look back at the year that was 2020. The global pandemic was both alarming and relentless. In the midst of it all, we witnessed our community respond in remarkable ways. As a network of schools, we worked diligently to maintain our connection with our students to continue cultivating the type of campus culture and community that transcends the bounds of distance learning. On this Inauguration Day, we honor the history being made today while also acknowledging the repair and rebuilding that is to come for our communities. A special thank you to ECHS teacher, Brandie Davis, for sharing her story. "My students leave high school with the knowledge and skills they need to be able to write their own stories and take charge of their own lives. As a Black teacher, it is my mission to ensure that my students know they matter and that they have power. B...lack teachers are vital to the success of young Black children, who need to see themselves in their curriculum as well as in leadership. They need to know that for them, anything is possible. Especially during this time of adversity, I call on all parents, educators and districts to keep Black students, teachers and staff top of mind. Only by doing this can we ensure the success of our educational communities." See more

As our students prepare to return to their virtual classrooms soon, we take a moment to recognize and appreciate one of our many community partners who have shown up for Environmental Charter Schools this holiday season. Thank you to Kinecta for your generous donation of food and gift cards to our most impacted families at all ECS schools. We are so grateful.

Environmental Charter High School - a food forest! The guavas tease passersby as countless fruits ripen overhead, creating a sweet suspense of an incoming harvest. Massive wild sunflowers towered well over 10ft, harboring an ecosystem of bugs and birds within the sunny canopies. Countless figs continue to ripen, although one must contend with the emerald-like Fig beetles to get at the sweet treats within the branches! Dragon fruits are emerging, in a dramatic display of fireballs from a dragon's breath. The grape orchards yield a spectacular show of fruit, hanging down great clusters beckoning one to pick! ECMS-Inglewood - Truly magical things happen here! August witnessed the birth and gradual take-off of two baby Mourning Doves, a good omen of new potential, adventure, and soaring possibilities! The campus has put forth a grand harvest of summer produce. Tomatoes spill out of the raised beds, a dazzling array of flowers speckle the gardens in color, inviting an ensemble of pollinators. Peruvian purple corn towers above the still developing summer crops, while heaps of guavas, prickly-pears, pomegranates, bananas, and figs beg to be consumed. -Eddie's Green Wisdom // words and photos by Eddie C.

As students and educators begin a new school year amid the ongoing upheaval of the global pandemic and worldwide demonstrations against systemic racism, essential questions about equity in education are taking center stage. Please join the first conversation in a year-long series, Facing History Now: Conversations on Equity and Justice, with Dr. John B. King, CEO of The Education Trust and former US Secretary of Education, and Dr. Janice K. Jackson, CEO of Chicago Public Schools. Drs. King and Jackson will discuss the role of education in this moment of national reckoning, and the importance of civic agency in our classrooms. Presented by Facing History and Ourselves
