Four Letter Words Type Catalog. "Make it bigger" is an often heard client suggestion that can drive graphic designers mad. But sometimes things actually do look better when big. We picked twenty-six fonts from the Emigre Library that we think look really good when used at a large size and gave them ample real estate to display their distinguishing details. Designed by Rudy VanderLans, this thirty-two-page type specimen features typefaces by Mr. Keedy, Jonathan Barnbrook, Zuz...ana Licko, Elliott Earls, Sibylle Hagmann and many others. Each typeface is used to spell out a four letter word suitable for print. You can download a free PDF version from the Emigre website. https://www.emigre.com/TypeSpecimens/FourLetterWords And if you're on the Emigre mailing list, you’ll receive a printed version within the next month or so. https://www.emigre.com/TypeSpecimens

Another collectable issue of Emigre magazine from our archive. For sale. For this edition Rudy VanderLans traveled to Switzerland to take a closer look at Swiss design in the early 90s, and how this powerful design tradition has been assimilated (and/or rejected) by a younger generation of graphic designers. Featuring interviews with Wolfgang Weingart, April Greiman, Hamish Stuart, Richard Feurer, Peter Bader, Hans-Rudolf Lutz and others. Only one copy left! Near perfect con...dition. https://www.emigre.com/Magazine/14 (Digital images by @letterformarchive)

Here’s another collectable issue of Emigre magazine from our archive that we are putting up for sale. https://www.emigre.com/Magazine/13 For Emigre #13 (1989), subtitled "Redesigning Stereotypes," we invited graphic designers from around the world to create a single image that would best represent their country or state in an effort to substitute current cultural stereotypes such as wooden shoes, Eiffel Towers, lederhosen, cowboys and kangaroos. Designers include Wolfgang We...ingart, Rick Valicenti, Malcolm Garrett, Lucille Tenazas, Neville Brody, Mitsuhiro Miyazaki, Philippe Apeloig, and many others. Only one copy left! Used, but near perfect condition. (Digital images by @letterformarchive)

This is the second of a series of rare back issues of Emigre magazine we are putting up for sale. See link in bio. Published in 1989, Emigre #12 looked at the connection between graphic design and printing, featuring a group of designers who use printing and pre-press as an integral part of the design process. Instead of reproducing existing work we asked the contributors to create original art that incorporated their ideologies. Work by Allen Hori, Warren Lehrer & Phil Zimme...rmann, Rudy VanderLans and an essay by Ed McDonald about the Dutch designer/printer H.N. Werkman. Only one copy left! Near perfect condition except for small crease in lower right corner of cover and first two pages. (Digital images by Letterform Archive.) https://www.emigre.com/Magazine/12

In the coming weeks, we will be putting a number of rare back issues of Emigre magazine up for sale. Published in 1986, Emigre #5 was still true to its original romantic concept as "The Magazine That Ignores Boundaries," featuring local Bay Area artists exploring the immigrant experience. Also, in terms of design production, #5 is exemplary of the transition period between traditional production techniques and Emigre's early bitmap fonts and layouts. Only one copy left! Use...d, slight discoloration on cover, and some denting. https://www.emigre.com/Magazine/5 (Digital images by Letterform Archive.)

Our friend Mike Nicholls runs a small magazine out of his studio in Oakland, California called Umber. It’s ad free, self-funded, and community supported. Much like the early days of Emigre. Check it out! https://www.umbermagazine.net/#about-section

The new Emigre Fonts catalog is here! Chowdown, is a type specimen in disguise, featuring 21 recipes cooked-up by Zuzana Licko. Compiled from a loose collection of scribbled comments on sticky notes and index cards filled with recipes that Licko and her husband Rudy VanderLans have been enjoying over the years, they are now sharing some of their favorites with you in this collection. Each recipe is paired with a delectable font freshly handpicked from the Emigre fonts library.... This scrumptious 64-pager was edited by Maria Zizka, author of The Newlywed Table cookbook, and garnished with a brand new picture font named Chowdown by Bay Area artist Tucker Nichols. https://www.emigre.com/Fonts/Chowdown If you’re on the Emigre mailing list, you’ll receive a printed version within the next month or so. Must have. Must read. The Lester Bangs of graphic design. Kenneth FitzGerald was one of a handful of writers who gave Emigre magazine its intellectual heft around the turn of the century, and helped solidify Emigre's reputation as one of the few design magazines to feature serious, long-form design criticism.
