Pathway of the Psoas; Tending to our Roots... a monthly gathering where we explore this deep ancient messenger within our bodies, the Psoas muscle group, through movement forms, as well as creativity, dance, sounding, journal explorations and other expressive art forms. This is a practice that I’ve developed that weaves all of my practices together from yoga, restorative, breathing, meditation, dance, Qi gong, gyrotonic, writing, expressive arts, sounding and more. Last week we worked on finding the relationship between the outer edge of our feet and our outer hip rotation. Once we find this relationship we have even more tools of embodying ourselves and knowing the inner and outer terrain of our own bodies. We worked with resisting the outer edge/arch of our foot into props to find greater external rotation of our femurs, drawing the femurs actually deeper into the sockets, which actually increases our capacity to lengthen our leg, alo...ng its inner seam, and lengthening muscle over bone. Most of us will not invest in our bodies or true self care, as we have been taught that they mean nothing. My work is all about teaching people, really self care, and how to care for your body, especially in times of stress, distress, injury and so forth. I saw a new client the other day... having lots of back and nerve pain. I work with this pattern a lot, the beginnings of sciatica. She tells me she went to see her doctor, and he prescribes her Advil. ... That is our western medical system for you. In a nutshell. I can’t tell you how many stories I have heard from clients and from my own experience. When I go see my oncologist now, I actually look at her and realize, she actually doesn’t understand the body... not the way I do or other body workers. She understands drugs and pharmaceuticals. I have numerous clients that have told me my work with them has helped them more than any PT and doctor they have seen. Is it the precision of alignment and cues? Is it the combination of the intelligence of yoga and Pilates? Is it just inviting the breath back into the body? I mean, real diaphragmatic breathing? Is it having someone witness and hold space for your body for that whole hour, with no other distractions? Is that all your body needs? To be seen? Listened to? Is it just slowing down? Trying something new, getting out of our own way? I think it is all of the above. I also see how people struggle with investing in this way into their bodies. What do we think has worth? Value? Does our body not? I am not trying to rip on the western medical system... but there is a lot wrong with it. The fact that this doctor and many others, prescribe pain killers, or others may send you a video of exercises. But seeing someone who understands kinesiology, movement and pain, that is the medicine. And we as practitioners do more than tell you to take a pill.. We give you life long tools. I give you exercises, alignment cues, ways to support yourself. Of course there is so much I’m grateful for. But this morning as I really dropped down into what it is exactly, I feel an immense amount of gratitude for those that hold space for others. I feel grateful for those who have held and carried me through difficult times. I feel grateful for all of my teachers, yoga, spiritual, dream, movement, and plant medicine. I feel grateful for my movement and spiritual practices that have held space for me in these past few years as I conti...nually heal my body. I took @benjaminflowersyoga class yesterday and I felt a huge burst or gratitude for this lineage of yoga we have been taught and practice. It is so intelligent. And as he was speaking, I felt my body singing and almost feeling electrified at each delicate subtle cue he said. I love the intelligence of the directions, the paying attention, the practice is all about embodiment and somatic experience. I usually only practice 3 wheel poses. He offered for us to try to work up to 15 a day. I started today with 10. In between each one I noticed how my body felt the floor ever more slightly. As I became more and more present. My breath deepened and slowed. And I thought what a perfect pose for today. As I am feeling the grief of it all. Sending love and gratitude to all of you. When I’m stressed, I clean, and I make. Helps me move that stressful nervousness through and out of my body. I like to make gifts every year for the holidays, and a few weeks ago I was thinking... what do people really need right now? I thought, plant medicine, healing, strengthening, and fortifying. I decided to make extra big batches of my own personal herbal medicines that I make for myself. One is Fire Ciders. These are decades old herbal tonics that help with immunity, g...ut health, colds and viruses, energizing, warming, nerve tonic and circulation. They are all made with organic raw apple cider vinegar, one of the oldest fermented foods on the planet, along with loads of organic garlic, onions, ginger, turmeric, all organic, and different medicinal herbs. A two hour workshop devoted again to neck issues. We will be looking at ways to use myofascial release techniques using a pinky ball, as well as traction methods, and then finally building strength all around the edges of our scapula and upper backs as well as our deep spinal muscles to free up the neck. When working with... neck issues and alignment, we must always look at shoulder alignment and tension. Working to strengthen the shoulder blades firm on the back frees up a lot of tension that gets passed on to neck, as well as learning how to access those deeper muscles of spine to support our heads. I regularly check in with myself to keep all my bodies in alignment with each other, my physical, emotional, imaginal, spiritual and mental. This keeping myself in check is essential. I’m not saying we have control over everything that happens in our lives, but we can be building our resilience along the way when things do ...fall apart, as we have seen, they do over and over again. Find your allies, human, elemental, plant and more. Find the friends that stick with you when things are hard. When you don’t look so good, when you’re not your usual funny self. These are the ones. I’m in my 4th week of graduate school! Finally attempting to get become licensed somatic therapist. Something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. My decades of working with the body and the healing process has taught me endlessly about the soul and spirit. Yoga for Scoliosis and Back Pain this Sunday September 27th, 2-4pm @anasayoga in this two hour workshop learn both passive and active forms of traction, to create length and space and hopefully less pain in our spines. We will talk about issues that come up for those of us with scoliosis or asymmetries in our bodies. We will address these issues by using two yoga straps, hopefully one long and one regular, a chair, 2 blocks, 2 blankets and a door. all levels welcome, scoli...osis is not mandatory to participate, this workshop is for anyone who wants to learn methods they can practice at home to help decompress their bodies and spines. We are not practicing standing poses, we are focusing more on therapeutic methods of yoga, but it is very deep and profound work.
