Programs that help autistic people navigate the hiring process and the workplace could help, Catherine Lord, distinguished professor of psychiatry and education at the University of California, Los Angeles. and her colleagues say, as could information that helps employers work more effectively with autistic people. For example, interviewers’ opinions of autistic interviewees improved after the questions were updated based on the interviewees’ feedback, according to a December study.

FREE virtual Spanish parent support group being facilitated through the UCLA Hispanic Neuropsychiatric Center of Excellence. The parent group was created in response to the public health crisis caused by COVID-19 to help parents cope with the transition to distance learning. There is growing evidence that children with learning disabilities and other neurodevelopmental disorders are being disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. This burden is exacerbated by inequaliti...es in access to educational and technological resources among Hispanic/Latino students. This group aims to help bridge that gap for participating families. The group is open to Spanish-speaking parents with children diagnosed with learning disabilities, ADHD, autism, or other learning differences or disorders that affect their access to education. The group is completely free to access and all sessions are virtual. Once parents respond, they will be provided with a secure Zoom link to attend.

This is great news for all our OC families! "In releasing the guidelines Tuesday, state public health officials defined cohorts as a stable group of a maximum of 14 children and two adults. The guidelines approves of activities such as occupational therapy, speech and language services and behavioral services for special needs students. The guidelines also allow for one-on-one services to be provided to a student from a supervisor outside the cohort. Face coverings and so...cial distancing are listed among the recommendations. The state has appropriately balanced student safety with the need to ensure children with special needs and other student populations have access to critical individualized programs, said Al Mijares, Orange County superintendent. This new guidance will help ensure they’re receiving the support they need to learn and thrive as we work toward the goal of resuming in-person instruction." https://www.ocregister.com//parents-of-special-needs-stud/
