¡Hola! My name is Daniela Kelly and I am honored to be the new executive director of the Sherman Heights Community Center. I would like to take this opportuni...ty to introduce myself. Back in 2005, I moved to 25th & Market in Sherman Heights. As I explored the neighborhood from Tamales El Chiapaneco, to Latte Mi Corazón, down Imperial, making my way to Chicano Park, it was not long before I walked by the Sherman Heights Community Center. I remember admiring its architecture and being curious about their programming. I first walked in to participate in a community-planning meeting and right away felt welcomed and seen. At the Center, I learned about the neighborhood’s vibrant community, important history and connection to the Chicano Movement and Chicano Park. I met its elders and learned about their struggles, determination, and resilience. I also met a younger generation of people actively working to improve the quality of life of Sherman residents by bringing resources and honoring their cultural heritage. Even though I have moved and now live closer to Sawaya Brothers Market, I continue to be involved with the Center. I served as Board Member and Arts & Culture chair from 2010-2014, led art workshops, worked with its youth program, and have volunteered at the Noche de Mole fundraiser. So you might even recognize me from one of these events! As executive director, I now put my work ethic and commitment to community-empowerment and inclusivity, along with a passion for the arts and culture at service of the Center’s growth and development. We are living through very challenging times and our community is disproportionately affected. As a wife and mother of two, Paloma who is 6 years old and León who is 4, I strive to protect my family, our community and to help us all get through this together. I look forward with joy and anticipation to the day we can all safely be together once again, until then I will be working hard to nurture an even brighter future for the Center and the community it serves. Con cariño Daniela
