Equity markets were down today, extending this week’s dip over the last few days. Why? 1) A renewed spike in COVID-19 cases has sparked worries over the potential threat to the economic recovery. -While the uptick in cases is a cause for concern, there is little movement from the government to impose another round of nationwide shutdowns.... 2) The recent breakdown in negotiations over a new round of fiscal aid has added to these concerns. -The delay is contributing to the market's anxiety about the near-term pace of the recovery, but we don't think it has to reverse either the progress already made or the economic momentum that carried us through September. What now? -Both of these factors have brought about pre election jitters. We expect market volatility to continue leading up to and after the election. -We believe the economic expansion will be sustained in the coming years on the back of a gradual improvement in the labor market, low interest rates and fiscal stimulus. -We recommend avoiding the temptation to make long term financial decisions on near-term political uncertainties.
