What are the different types of braces available? Braces, also called fixed orthodontic appliances, generally come in three varieties: brackets, metal or plastic, clear or tooth-colored, that are bonded to teeth lingual-type brackets that attach to the back of teeth, hidden from view bands that cover most of the teeth with metal bands that wrap around the teeth All three types use wires to move the teeth to the desired position.

Dear Friends... If you do not effectively remove the plaque which accumulates around your braces, it can leave permanent stains or marks on your teeth called decalcification. These white marks, lines and spots from decalcification may remain on your teeth for life. So make sure that your spend enough time cleaning your braces and also reduce your intake of sugar!

Why do you want a nice smile? Dear Freinds... Did you know that... If you want to keep all your teeth as you age, it helps to live in Hawaii and to be a non-smoker, according to a 1999 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Only 14% of people 65 or older who live in Hawaii are completely toothless. At least 48% of people of the same age in West Virginia have lost all their teeth, according to the survey of more than 27,000 people in 46 states.

How important is patient cooperation during orthodontic treatment? Successful orthodontic treatment is a "two-way street" that requires a consistent, cooperative effort by both the orthodontist and patient. To successfully complete the treatment plan, the patient must carefully clean his or her teeth, wear rubber bands, headgear or other appliances as prescibed by the orthodontist, and keep appointments as scheduled. Damaged appliances can lengthen the treatment time and may... undesirably affect the outcome of treatment. The teeth and jaws can only move toward their desired positions if the patient consistently wears the forces to the teeth, such as rubber bands, as prescribed. Patients who do their part consistently make themselves look good and their orthodontist look smart. To keep teeth and gums healthy, regular visits to the family dentist must continue during orthodontic treatment. Adults who have a history of or concerns about periodontal (gum) disease might also see a periodontist (specialist in treating diseases of the gums and bone) on a regular basis throughout orthodontic treatment.
