CA is already breaking records this election, but we can't stop there! Register to vote! Full clip quote: "In terms of my part in this election process, I have never been adamant and proclaimed who I would vote for, however, I do emphasize the importance of voting and the privilege of voting. In my intercultural communication class we talk about citizen privilege, and we talk about how this isn’t something that isn’t just granted for everyone. And we also talk about the implications of voting and the implications of not voting. How that communicates and what happens if we resonate from it." #electioneducation #election2020 #eddfresnostate #edleadershippanel #edleadership #eddfaculty #eddalumni #eddfresnostate #votecalifornia #votefresnocounty

Missed our webinar last Thursday? We will be posting highlights throughout the week We are grateful for our guest speaker Samuel Molina, CA State Director of Mi Familia Vota who has worked with hundreds of youth in promoting civic engagement. He gave us pieces of wisdom from his experience. Full quote from video clips "Know your history. The more our youth and citizens are aware of the history of the vote, the more they're not gonna have that kind of apathy anymore or tha...t kind of fatigue. You know there were days not too long ago where the sheriff was stopping people from going to the elections office and going to vote. We still have states right now who are actively trying to suppress the vote. We have states like Tennesee and Florida.. again, we had the civil rights act pass for a reason. We had that fight for a reason. Your vote does matter. Your vote certainly matters. If it didn't, nobody would stop you from doing it. In Florida in 2018 voters said they wanted individuals who served on parole.. they said they should be allowed to vote. And what happened in Florida? The legislature stepped in and said now you have to pay your fines before you can vote. It's another example of a poll tax, Jim Crow era laws. And in Tennessee they wanted to suppress protectors because they're saying if more than 70 people assemble and get out of hand or become violent, they can be charged and lose the right to vote. I'm hoping that we have a department of justice who will go after these states and fight them. Because I feel like these laws are unlawful and we shouldn't be trying to stifle people's freedom of speech. People should have the right to assemblen the right to protest. And if the Florida voters say these people have the allowed to vote, there's no reason the legislature needed to step in and stop that. Know your history. Get involved. I know there have been studies that say students who take ethnic studies are more likely to be engaged in politics. Get involved know your history. We are still fighting for our right to vote because the United States has never been a full democracy, it's never been for everyone. So we have to keep fighting for that vote it definitely does matter. And if you know your history, you're not gonna miss an election moving forward." See more
