After 30 years of dedicated service, we congratulate Sergeant Louis Borunda, #12772, on his well deserved retirement. Sergeant Borunda entered the California Highway Patrol Academy with CTC 1-89, and upon graduation, reported to the East Los Angeles Area. Within his first six months, Sergeant Borunda earned his 10851 pin, and continued earning a reputation for being a hard charger. As an officer, he was a true "road dawg," and became a highly respected FTO. After a brief as...signment with a local P.D., he returned to the CHP in 1998 and was assigned to the Central Los Angeles Area. He then traveled to the Baldwin Park Area in 1999. On January 1, 2019, he promoted to the rank of Sergeant and transferred "back to where it all began in East L.A.". Sergeant Borunda has earned the respect of all members of the CHP family. We wish him continued success and happiness in his retirement. #californiahighwaypatrol #eastlosangeles #retirementday #chp #officer #sergeant #aarp #bestwishes #neverforget

This is Child Passenger Safety Week -- we need your help in spreading the message of keeping children SAFER & away from DANGER by checking to make sure they are PROPERLY secured. Vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for children age 13 and under. The CHP, which works every day to help prevent those deaths, is partnering with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to promote Child Passenger Safety Week. In 2017, NHTSA data showed that 37 percent ...of the children killed in car crashes were unrestrained, & almost 60 percent of children’s safety seats ARE USED INCORRECTLY. Useful information about the proper seat choice and installation tips are available at https://www.chp.ca.gov/Programs-Servic//Child-Safety-Seats. California law requires that all children under 8 years of age be properly restrained in an appropriate child safety seat in the BACK SEAT of a vehicle. Children under 2 years of age must ride in a rear-facing car seat in the back seat. Children who are at least 8 years old or 4 feet 9 inches tall should continue to ride in the back seat in either a safety seat, such as a booster seat, or lap/shoulder belt. Children should be kept in an appropriate child seat until they reach the upper height and weight recommended by the car seat manufacturer. DRIVERS are responsible for ensuring that children and adults in their car are safely secured in the correct safety seat or seat belt on every ride, every time. ###

Excerpt from Tessa Robinson, Managing Editor for We Are The Mighty: We all remember exactly where we were when we heard the news of a terrorist attack on that beautiful, clear Tuesday morning in September. But what I can't remember is the night before. I don't remember September 10, 2001. Who I called. What I said. How I spoke to or treated the people I love the most. I can't remember how I felt that night, or how I made others feel. While the rest of the world will remember ...9/11 - as we all should - I seem to always spend more time reflecting about 9/10. I'll spend today and tonight in deep reflection -- hoping that the mommies made time for one more story, the daddies had patience for one more hug. I pray that couples went to sleep holding hands instead of onto arguments or petty fights. I'll hope that friends found words of forgiveness and that the children too busy to call their parents made time. Today, I think of the hundreds of people who packed suitcases, briefcases, even diaper bags thinking that "tomorrow" would be just another day. Today, I'll spend a little extra time practicing gratitude, being intentional with my children and offering more words of support, tenderness and empathy. I hope you'll join me. In a time of such great divisiveness of our country, let us take today to remember that we are better United. We are stronger as humans, as brothers and sisters, and as Americans, when we can find tolerance, kindness, mercy and love. Let the heroes of 9/11 -- and their unfinished stories on 9/10 -- remind us that tomorrow is never "just another day."

TRAFFIC SAFETY SHOULD NEVER TAKE A HOLIDAY SACRAMENTO, Calif. Labor Day typically marks the end of the summer travel period, but 2020 has been anything but typical. Although many Californians may forego the long weekend road trip this year for a staycation, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will still implement its Labor Day Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP). The CHP advises all drivers to take precautions that keep themselves safe behind the wheel and protect others suc...h as buckling up, avoiding distractions, adhering to a safe and legal speed, and never driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Last year during the Labor Day holiday weekend, 45 people were killed in crashes throughout California. Nearly three-quarters of all the vehicle occupants killed within CHP jurisdiction were not wearing a seat belt. In addition, the CHP made more than 1,000 arrests for driving under the influence during the 78-hour enforcement effort in 2019. Getting behind the wheel of a vehicle while under the influence is extremely dangerous, not only to the person driving but to everyone on the road with them, said CHP Commissioner Warren Stanley. If you travel this holiday weekend, make smart decisions and drive to arrive. To help keep California’s roadways safe and assist motorists this weekend, all available CHP officers will be on patrol for the MEP, which begins at 6:01 p.m. on Friday, September 4, and continues through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, September 7. This year, in addition to the MEP, the Office of Community Outreach and Media Relations produced a powerful public service announcement on the devastating impact driving under the influence had on a CHP officer and his family. You can watch the documentary called Falling here: www.chp.social Over the past few years, the CHP increased its training efforts to detect impaired drivers. All CHP officers and sergeants have received additional training in the detection of impaired drivers. California also has the highest number of personnel trained as Drug Recognition Experts (DRE) in the nation. For the Labor Day MEP, DREs will be on duty throughout the state. The CHP also reminds Californians to take safety precautions recommended by the California Department of Public Health to protect themselves, their families, and others from COVID-19 including physical distancing, wearing a face-covering if you go out in public, washing your hands for 20 seconds, and remaining at home if you become sick. The mission of the CHP is to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security. ###

March 18, 2019: This was DAY 1 of break-in at #ELA for 19 new officers who recently graduated the @chp_academy, & were fortunate to receive assignments to the East Los Angeles Area Office. Most unique about that day were the number of group pictures we took. There's a reason for everything. Today, August 30, 2020, a year has passed since we learned one of our brothers made a decision that we wish was never made. Each day & night, our officers rise up to the challenge of help...ing others in need. The California Highway Patrol's mission is to provide the HIGHEST level of safety, service & security. We continually rise up to meet new challenges. The challenge of helping those suffering from depression can be difficult, but it is not impossible. The Guerra family reminded us that a strong Marine Corps veteran gifted with the biggest smile & sense of humor can be derailed from the realization of hope. On behalf of the Guerra family, we rise up to the challenge, and encourage anyone quietly losing hope to ask for help. Call 1-800-273-8255 or text 838255. Assistance is available 24/7. #californiahighwaypatrol #suicideprevention #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #suicide #selfcare #suicideawarness #love #selflove #loveyourself #youarenotalone #bekind #covid #eastlosangeles #breakin #pushups #535strong #motivated #dedicated #weareinthistogether #itwillgetbetter #hope #wewillneverforget

The CHP prides itself in going the extra mile to provide the highest quality of safety, service, and security... we always have, and we always will. Our office recently received a lengthy letter from an individual describing "life-saving" actions of a CHP motor officer from an incident that occurred in 2011. Our office also recently received a direct message through our Instagram page from an individual describing the positive impression one of our officers left with her a...fter a traffic enforcement stop. This enforcement stop occurred within the last few weeks. The PRIDE we share in doing our job, wearing the tan uniform, representing EAST LA, is strengthened by the actions & decisions made by our brothers & sisters. To the motor officer who assisted Amy back in 2011 on the I-10 freeway, and to Officer M. Albert #22287 -- thank you for representing our badge.
