With Thanksgiving almost here, we know that you may have a busy household and so much going on. Whether you have time to do arts and crafts or are busy in the kitchen cooking, there are always opportunities to practice language. Here are a few ideas you can practice verbally or with your AT/ AAC device: ... Verbs: "Dad is carving the turkey." Verb tenses: "The potatoes are already cooked but the turkey is still cooking." Adjectives: "Don't touch that hot pie yet. " Following directions: "Can you please pass me the sugar and the flour?" Providing opportunities for the use of sign language with your little one: "Are you done?" "Want more?" "Need help?" "Want to eat?" More on WH questions: Being able to ask and answer WH questions is essential to a child's language development. WH questions help children participate in conversations with others, not only when answering the questions they are asked, but also to maintain a conversation and ask follow up questions. Check out these images to see the developmental and predictable sequence children may follow to answer WH questions.... Rememeber to ask your child both close-ended and open-ended questions. #speechlanguage #speechtherapy #whquestions #speechtelepractice #SLP #SLPA #AAC #AT #assistivetechnology #dynamictherapysolutions
Flashback Friday: We miss all of our face to face meetings with our wonderful clients. In the meantime, here are some pictures of our lovely Speech Therapist Miss Emily working with one of our awesome clients. Quick tips on targeting WH questions:... Ask your child both close-ended and open-ended questions. Ask your child "what," "who," "where," "when," "why" questions throughout the day: During your morning routine- "What do you want to eat for breakfast?" During your night routine- "Who do you want to tuck you into bed today?" During a game of hide and seek- "Where should we hide next?" While getting ready- "When was the last time you wore your blue shoes?" During play time- "Why do you like this toy so much?" Give your child processing time in order to answer your question. If your child is having difficulty answering your questions, provide them with two choices: "What do you want to eat for breakfast?" . . . (No respose) "Do you want waffles or pancakes?" #speechlanguage #speechtherapy #whquestioncards #superduperpublications #speechtelepractice #SLP #SLPA #AAC #AT #assistivetechnology #dynamictherapysolutions
There are many Augmentative/Alternative Communication (AAC) devices out there and many reasons why someone may benefit from a device. Here is a post to introduce you to some of the different types of AAC. No tech AAC systems are: gestures, signs, paper-based, or rapid access communication aids that do not need batteries or electricity.... Light/ Mid tech AAC systems are: electronic devices that are battery-operated and have digitized or recorded speech with simpler programing functions for voice-output. High tech AAC systems are: Speech generating electronic devices that permit the storage and retrieval of messages. Using AAC effectively involves multi-modal communication: gestures, signs language, facial expressions, vocalizations and words along with the users device. Modeling the use of these devices/ systems is important. #speechlanguage #speechtherapy #speechtelepractice #SLP #SLPA #AAC #AT #assistivetechnology #AACdevices #notechAAC #lowtechAAC #midtechAAC #hightechAAC #dynamictherapysolutions
