Why did Linda Neelan do it? Here’s what she said - I’m one of those people that doesn’t take the flu shot or the pneumonia shot of any of that so when this came out, I was like, no not gonna do it. I wanted to see if they had anything that was negative after they got the shot and all of that and they’ve been fine. So, I decided this is my week, I’m going to go Thursday and get it done. The pandemic has left many of us reflecting on our lives. That contemplation has resulted in some significant changes. We question what really matters? How can I make a difference? Why do people suffer? That has all allowed many people to slow down and enjoy a new perspective on life. For DeAnn Walters, the Director of Clinical Affairs and Quality Improvement for the California Association of Health Facilities (CAHF), it didn't end by simply asking questions - that's whe...re it started - it ended with action. DeAnn knows firsthand the suffering and struggles that many frontline healthcare workers endure. After all, she is the former Administrator of Dycora Transitional Health & Living Fresno. She sees the way the media often negatively portrays our industry. She also understands the needs of the staff and the lack of financial resources that many face. That lack of financial resources can result in staff having no transportation of their own, leaving uncertainty on how to get to work - yet knowing patients are counting on them. DeAnn reflects many years back, when her own mother, Joyce Cape, worked multiple jobs in order to put food on the table. Fast forward to 2020 and they both feel blessed to be able to fully provide for their families, now having enough to bless others. Wanting to acknowledge that healthcare workers are selfless and dedicated, DeAnn and Joyce were inspired by the Kindness Diaries on Netflix - to come up with a plan. It was no small plan. They wanted to give away a vehicle to a deserving healthcare worker. So they contacted the leadership team at Dycora Transitional Health & Living - Fresno, sharing their plan and asking them to come up with a recommendation on which employee should receive the car. Like all good plans, it grew from there. Family friends, Charis Campbell and Barbara Bray learned of their efforts and felt compelled to participate. They assisted by donating enough money to help the employee who would receive the car pay for insurance and gas. On August 24th, Julie Vang, a 5-year employee with our dietary staff was given a vehicle. Her reaction was priceless. Her gratitude unending. Prior to receiving this gift, she relied on family and friends to get her where she needed to go. Together, DeAnn, Joyce, Charis and Barbara know our world needs more kindness. They also know that it needs to begin with us. As individuals. They want their desire to show kindness to grow and see others inspired to do the same. It's a Cinderella kind of story. Have courage. Be kind. #strength #hope #COVID19 #kindness
