Mary kay and I had a great weekend in La Quinta. We played Bocce Ball for the first time and actually won! Got to love that beginner's luck!

"Dry eye is a major problem for many people living in our arid mountain climate. It is particularly a big problem for women over age 50. If you have symptoms of irritation, burning, stinging, redness, or a gritty sensation, you probably have dry eye. Call for an appointment so I can professionally determine how severe and what the cause of your dry eye may be so together we can institute the appropriate treatment and make your eyes white and comfortable again.

If you have children or are a grandparent, this information will be of particular interest to you. There seems to be a lot of ignorance out there about eye care for children so let me be clear about what needs to be done and when. The first eye examination by an eye doctor should be before 12 months of age. If all is OK, the next at age 3 then the next before kindergarten then every single year through school. We all forget that the human visual system is the most impor...tant system we use to learn, work and play. Since 80% of all learning comes through the eyes and visual system, it just makes sense the eyes should be checked yearly. So please take the time now and schedule a thorough eye exam for your student before school starts. By the way, the sight screening done at school, while helpful, is not adequate to detect vision problems that can affect learning. See more

Now that summer is here, please remember a few simple things to keep your eyes safe. At Bear Valley’s 7,000 feet altitude your eyes are receiving about 28% more UV radiation than at sea level. Research is finding that UV damage is CUMULATIVE over your lifetime and is a contributing factor in macular degeneration and cataract formation. Wearing good quality 100% UV absorbing sun wear is essential whenever you venture outdoors. Allergies are also more common for lots of folks causing itching and watery eyes. Using drops such as Zaditor or Alaway twice daily will give relief as well as frequent use of artificial tears to flush the allergens from the eyes. From the whole crew, have a great July!!

Summer is here and it is a great time to get your children's annual eye exam done. We forget that 80% of all learning occurs through the eyes and visual system so be sure your student gets a thorough eye exam before school starts. Mention you saw this post and get $20.00 off a pair of glasses through July. Enjoy your summer! Dr. Almaraz
