Have you ever wondered about the background of the Green Shutter Hotel? It may be Fall, but #DowntownHayward is in full bloom! The DHIA maintenance team set up these beautiful planters around Downtown. Comment below and share your favorite thing about Fall in Hayward.
It’s #HistoricHayward time! You might know Hayward is named after early settler William Hayward - but did you know our town used to be called Haywood, or Hayward’s/Haywards? After William Hayward first established Hayward’s Hotel in #DowntownHayward, the town was known as Hayward’s. But, when he applied to have a post office in the building, the Postal Service had a policy prohibiting naming post offices after living people. So, the town post office was listed for Haywood, CA. After William’s passing, the town dropped the apostrophe, and in 1910, lost the ‘s’ as well - leaving just ‘Hayward’. When you walk by A Street and Mission Boulevard in Downtown, you’re passing the original site of William Hayward’s hotel and saloon - the original namesake of our town!
If you love playthayward’s mac ‘n cheese, you’ve GOT to try their brunch! Playt’s eggs benedict, made with creole crab cakes and cajun hollandaise, is out of this world. Playt is available for takeout, and also offering socially-distanced outdoor seating for eating takeout on their patio (no table service).
It’s #HistoricHayward time! In 1922, Hayward resident Ruth Rogers became the first woman to sit on the Hayward City Council, beating out two men in the race for the role. During her tenure she helped grow the City, and worked closely with the Health Department on child welfare and other issues. She was part of the Council which voted to begin construction of Downtown Hayward’s historic City Hall (the art deco building on Mission Boulevard). We’re grateful for Ruth’s legacy of influential women leaders in Hayward! You can learn more about Ruth by visiting Hayward Area Historical Society website: https://www.haywardareahistory.org/ruth-rogers
Craft Eatery is open for socially-distanced dining out, and delicious takeout too! Their green bean fries are one of a kind - these count as one of our 5 a day, right? Visit https://www.ordercrafteatery.com/ for takeout menu and dining hours.
Even though the Hayward Public Library isn’t open for regular service, our #DowntownHayward library is still offering a lot of resources to our community! You can take advantage of contactless pickup, or take part in one of their Families for Literacy parenting workshops. Visit https://www.hayward-ca.gov/public-library to learn more!
Did your family love dining out safely this summer with our Together for Downtown Hayward Saturday street closure series? We’re continuing the fun with a smaller set of street closures for Fall! Saturdays through the end of October, Main Street will be closed to through traffic between B and C Streets, allowing restaurants to expand their outdoor dining area. On A Street, Sapporo will also have outdoor dining space. Comment below what you’re looking forward to eating at our next Together for Downtown Hayward event!
If you’ve been enjoying our #HistoricHayward features, check out the Hayward Area Historical Society’s online exhibits for fun and informative slices of life from another era! We especially love this virtual #DowntownHayward Walking Tour from yesteryear. https://www.haywardareahistory.org/downtown-hayward
Exciting news: the Maple & Main development in #DowntownHayward is moving forward! The project will bring a combination of 314 market-rate and affordable apartments, and retail and commercial space to Downtown. Demolition has already begun! We can’t wait to see the final complex.
Bon Mange Hayward is open for takeout! Tasty milk tea, ice cream, and macarons are all available. Do you like your milk tea with or without tapioca pearls?
The DHIA maintenance team is working hard daily to maintain the presentation of #DowntownHayward. We appreciate their work keeping our Downtown looking beautiful!
Jessie from @bayblowbar here! I’m taking over DHIA’s social media today as part of their local business feature series. When I worked at other styling shops, I noticed that they catered to only one type of woman. I was inspired to create a place that could tackle any type of hair for ALL women. Women of color like myself with textured hair never thought blow dry bars were for them before us. My whole message is to unite women from all backgrounds with something we all love... getting our hair done! Learn more in our stories.
