Governor, Legislature Announce Agreement About Returning to Schools On March 1, Gov. Gavin Newsom and leaders in the State Legislature announced an agreement that gets more of us one step closer to rejoining our students for in-person teaching and learning. There are some good parts to the agreement and some that are concerning. The agreement, said CTA President E. Toby Boyd in a statement , "includes funding for the multi-tiered safety measures educators have been calling f...or. It recognizes community transmission rates and the importance of prioritizing educators for the COVID-19 vaccine for those already working in schools and those who will be moving to in-person instruction. While CTA has not taken a position on the companion measures in Senate Bill/ Assembly Bill 86, Boyd recognized the $2 billion designed to help more schools open safely as well as those already open, and to penalize schools in communities with higher transmission rates that can’t open immediately and school districts that have announced plans to open after April 1 . We know many of you have been physically in schools for some time now and we commend you for confronting the challenges uniquely posed in your community. We see you and know that we are advocating for each one of you every step of the way. We’re in this together. IMPORTANT NOTE: Already negotiated safety plans are grandfathered in to the agreement, and nothing in the plan supersedes locals' right to bargain under the Educational Employment Relations Act. https://www.cta.org//gov-newsom-and-legislature-announceme
