I wish all dog parks had this: 1 enclosure for big dogs 1 enclosure for tiny dogs and 1 enclosure for people who want to just be alone with their own dogs. My dogs love sniffing around this park and getting to play. Splash and Tug like greeting the other dogs through the fence. On occasion Halo will but Wish rarely will have any interest in greeting a dog unless the dog is calm and relaxed. As Halo went into adolescence, he was less excited by food than he was about toys when... out and about so I started throwing treats for him and he really enjoys it. He’ll even jump off the ground to catch them as you can see in the footage. Tossing the treats has been a training game changer for him, as With toys he can be too excited to use in some training situations. I have used access to the environment instead of treats when he was not into them so much. Kiko my chihuahua I leave at home when I go here because It can be scary getting to the park when sometimes people have their dogs off leash. I wish all people obeyed leash laws. See more

Sound On Halloween’s just around the corner so playing this spooky game with Halo. FYI he’s not really scared, ‘Boo!’ means run. He loves the anticipation of waiting for me to say it. (We don’t play this game often or for longer than a minute because it’s a repetitive hard turning movement)

Careful time and training spent teaching my dogs to find it a positive experience spending time together has really paid off. I figured that getting my latest puppy Halo I could teach Wish to feel safe and relaxed around him and train him to ignore her as she is a very antisocial dog. But as the time went and the positive safe experiences kept adding up, Wish’s bond with Halo has grown and grown to the point now where she will hop on my bed to lay near him. I never walked Ha...lo with her growing up because I was worried about him picking up on her anxieties but when we evacuated for the fires I was shocked that when I walked Halo with Wish she was so much calmer than I’d ever seen her in a new place. I thought it was a fluke. But it was not. Whenever I bring Halo with Wish she’s a different dog. I feel so blessed to have all my dogs, but it is such a joy to see how getting Halo has greatly improved the quality of Wish’s life. In this picture Wish has a soft expression on her face while out and about with Halo. I’ve cried many many tears over Wish. My wish was for her to find joy and happiness in life and by gosh this walk with Halo somewhere new. I saw her find it See more

Footage from when I met up with a trainer friend Jan Cizik @wholedogtrainingsd to work on my dogs interacting with people at the park. It’s a great idea to set up training set ups that are controlled if you are planning to work with your dog in public rather than trying to use strangers to help train your dog which can sometimes lead to the opposite outcome that you hoped for.

In my latest youtube video I discuss why I am so thrilled about Lili Chin’s book Doggie Language: A Dog Lover’s Guide to Understanding Your Best Friend I was brought to tears when talking about this book because I know that this book is going to change the lives of so many dogs and their people for the better. Learning how to read your dog’s body language is such an important skill for a two-sided relationship with your dog. Lili has an exceptionally advanced understanding... of reading dog body language yet she has found a way to translate the information into easy to understand pictures and texts that will help not only those with little to no dog experience but also professionals in the dog world. Thank you Lili for putting so much time, skill and love into this book! It’s greatly appreciated by all of us whose life work is to better the lives and relationships of people and their dogs. I spent a lot of time training my dogs to not be scared of smoke alarms. And this morning its paying off. The stupid alarm is chirping intermittently and I cannot for the life of me figure out which device is chirping, I have so many.... Can someone PLEASE invent a smoke alarm that when the battery is low it alerts your smart phone, or perhaps emits a low continuous noise that starts out soft and gets louder so 1- You can actually figure out where the noise is coming from and 2- so dogs don't need extensive training to be cool with the creepy chirping noise. (video on how I worked with the dogs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkHuLK5UyAI )

Along with avoiding training your dog on slippery surfaces like the kitchen floor or hardwood floor, it’s a great idea if your dog has long hair between his toes to trim it so it doesn’t sit over the pads. This is because if the hair hangs over the pads it creates less traction for the dog if you do have areas in your home with tile, hardwood or laminate. Trimming the nails weekly to keep them the appropriate length also helps reduce slipping.

Splash’s stupid pet trick. She opens her mouth when I open mine. Does anyone do Do as I do or mimicry of head movements, mouth movements or winking and blinking with their mimicry training? My dogs pick up mimicry from trick training since a lot of the tricks involve similar movements of handler and dog.
