I neglected to make a welcome-and-thank-you post for yesterday's #photostudio rental. James F had shot here many times in the past, with Alan Brenner's glamour group shoot series. It'd been a while, but he returned for a new small group shoot of his own yesterday! The half-day studio rental booking was perfect for himself and two partner photographers to shoot with two models. One thing they didn't realize is that studio rentals include the use of four #Alienbees #photostrob...es (3x B1600/1x B800) with a range of modifiers. So they won't even have to bring their own lighting gear next time, which makes things all the easier and more convenient. Great #photoshoot today with Paul M and Stephen DeBoard from Herd of Us! We did some in-studio shots including some crazy cool wide-angle fun, along with more standard portraits. And made a short "field trip" for some outdoor shots with a nearby street mural and some other features of the urban environment. Very nice to meet you earlier this evening, DeVogue J. She's a model now confirmed for her first-time #photostudio rental here next week, and it sounds like she's got a good crew put together for her shoot. When she first called, she said another studio had flaked out on her, and "a friend who had used your studio" referred her. Today, recognizing some of the beautiful work of Lisa Berczel in photographs on the lobby walls, DeVogue said Lisa is the referring friend! Great #photoshoot with #hiphop artist Anna Oakley yesterday! This lady is SO talented and hard-working! She's just started her own #recordlabel, and is getting after it with recording and promoting her music, with a new #musicvideo coming soon as well! Over the past two years, she's done a number of recording sessions at D. M. Gremlin Studios Recording Studio, both for her own material and as a #featuredartist on other projects, and this is our second photo shoot together. ...This shoot was based upon a #gunslinger theme combining historical and modern touches - SO much fun to shoot Anna in this intense and dramatic persona! Thank you Ken for makeup, and thank you Michelle for taking these #candid snapshots during the shoot! In addition to the #behindthescenes views of Anna's wardrobe and makeup styling, here's a fun one of myself and Anna on set during the actual shooting, and of the two of us reviewing some images on the camera back. For this character, I shot primarily with hard lights, using multiple lights with various sizes of honeycomb grids. This was all about tight lighting control, using targeted spotlights on Anna's face and the significant props, and rim lights to "outline" and break her off of the black background, creating the desired high-contrast look while retaining a dark overall setting and plenty of dramatic shadows.
